The UK is Testing Out Roads that Charge Electric Cars as They Are on the MOVE

Published by

Technology is always on the move—and the United Kingdom which has seen increase in electric cars over the last few years is set to test out roads that charge electric cars while they are the move…

Pretty awesome…right?

The trial for this is set to take place later this year—and full details will be revealed once a contractor has been appointed.

According to UK’s Transport Minister-Andrew Jones “the government is already committing £500 million over the next five years to keep Britain at the forefront of this technology.”

The Minister added that, “Vehicle technologies are advancing at an ever increasing pace and we’re committed to supporting the growth of ultra-low emissions vehicles on England’s motorways and major A roads,” Mike Wilson, Highways England’s chief highways engineer.”

He continued; “The off-road trials of wireless power technology will help to create a more sustainable road network for England and open up new opportunities for businesses that transport goods across the country.”

Though this scheme is ambitious and a potential game changer, “this isn’t the first trial of its kind. In South Korea, a 7.5-mile (12 km) stretch of road charges up electric buses as they drive along, via a process called Shaped Magnetic Field in Resonance (SMFIR),” reports Mashable.

The website adds that “in England, a trial in Milton Keynes saw buses charged wirelessly through plates in the road, but they had to stop moving to receive the juice.”
