The much touted candidacy of lawyer Philip Addison went up in smoke this afternoon in heavily contested polls held in the Klottey Korle constituency.
Former constituency chairman Nii Noi Nortey polled 393 votes, whilst Addison came second with a paltry 22 votes. A third contestant, Samuel Tawiah, got 19 votes.
The elections itself was hotly disputed, with Addison and Tawiah boycotting the elections. The NPP head lawyer during the election petition claimed a party meeting had scheduled the elections for next Sunday, but party chairman Kwabena Agyepong had overruled that to have the elections held today.
The lawyer called the elections ‘illegal’, and police were needed to keep calm in a highly charged atmosphere.
In the end, the elections were held and Addison suffered a very humiliating defeat. It is unclear what the next move for the experienced lawyer, who is a close ally of flagbearer Nana Addo, is going to be.
