First Female Appointed To Head Nigeria’s Electoral Commission

The way we emulate each other, Ghana and Nigeria, it gets a little creepy sometimes.

So all the problems we complain about, they have it tenfold in Nigeria. Anyway, after Charlotte Osei became the first female head of Ghana’s electoral commission, Nigeria President Buhari has appointed a female to head Nigeria’s electoral body.

Mohammed Buhari has appointed Amina Bala Zakari as acting head of Nigeria’s Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). Mrs Zakari replaces former head Professor Attahiru Jega, who steps down after presiding over the landmark polls that brought the former General to power.

The appointment of Mrs Zakari is a temporal one, and would remain in force until the appointment of a substantive chairman is made.

Amina Zakari, until her appointment, was a National Electoral Commissioner. She is a pharmacist, with a Bsc in Pharmacy from Ahmadu Bello University. She once served as a special assistant to former President Obasanjo, and has been at INEC since 1997.
