Ebola Human Vaccine Trials to Be Held In Ghana

Ebola

The disease has been booted out in Liberia, still causing havoc in Sierra Leone and Guinea, so striving for a vaccine is an admirable cause, and one that many international agencies are working towards.

However, I would think carrying out Ebola trials would be useful in the countries actually infected by Ebola.

A report by Starrfmonline indicates trials on an Ebola vaccine is set to commence in Ghana. Students of Hohoe Midwifery Training College have been selected as the sample to be used for the trials, with phones and cash to be given out as incentives.

The trials are being spearheaded by officials of the University of Health and Allied Sciences in Ho, with officials indicating they have the full backing of the World Health Organisation.

The students however, are not so thrilled that they might be used as ‘guinea pigs’ for the trials.

“We don’t know whether the vaccine is safe or not, whether we’ll contract the disease or otherwise. Nobody is explaining anything to us. I think it’s dangerous because we must know the potential risk” One of them told Starr.

With another set of trials planned in the near future, one has to wonder if we are not searching for trouble. We managed to stay clear of the epidemic and now we have human trials going on and it all just seems jarring to me.

If you were a student at that University, I wonder if you’ll agree to go within one mile of that vaccine.
