Egypt’s former leader, Mohammed Morsi, has been sentenced to death by an Egyptian court over a mass prison break in 2011, BBC reports.

The Egyptian court ruled on the case of the ousted president, who has already been sentenced to 20 years in prison for torturing protesters during his time in power, on Saturday May 16, 2015.

However, the sentencing of Mohammed Morsi can only be carried out after the Grand Mufti (the highest official religious law in a Muslim country) has given his confirmation.

Convictions are still open to appeal, even if the Grand Mufti gives his approval for the penalty to be carried out.

Morsi was deposed by the military in July 2013 following mass street protests against his rule. Since then, the authorities have banned his Muslim Brotherhood movement and arrested thousands of his supporters.

The court will pronounce its final decision on June 2.
