Burundi Coup Leaders Arrested As President Nkurunziza Regains Control

The cabal of Burundian army officers who instigated a coup d’état against the President have been arrested as the President regains control of the country.
Yesterday, the Burundian army announced a coup to take over running of the country. The President was in Tanzania for a regional summit when the announcement was made. General Godfroid Niyombare, a former close ally of the President who was fired as Intelligence chief in February, led the coup.
However, most of those soldiers have been arrested this morning, reports the BBC. Chief amongst them is renegade general and former defence minister General Cyrille Ndayirukiye, who was the senior most member of the current government who joined the coup.
However coup leader General Godefroid Niyombare is “still on the run”. The President, who was in Tanzania at the time of the coup and was prevented from flying back, is reported to be back in the country.
President Pierre Nkurunziza announced he would be running for a third term, despite the constitution limiting the President to two terms. It sparked off series of protests that led to the death of 20 people with over 200 injured in clashes with police.

With his return to power, it looks inevitable that he’ll make a run for that third term.
