It’s not just privately owned broadcasting networks like Joy FM which recently announced a cut in its transmission hours because of Dumsor that are heavily suffering under the current power crisis in Ghana—even the state owned GBC is doing the same.
GBC officials say they cannot afford to transmit for 24 hours again and as such, each day they will cut their transmission at 12 midnight and resume after 4am, all because of dumsor. This means GTV and its subsidiaries will now end transmission at 12:00am and resume at 4:00am.
The Director General of GBC Major (Rtd) Albert B. Don-Chebe confirmed this to Joy FM but denied reports that staff will be laid off as being speculated.
It’s obvious the ‘Dumsor’ is affecting everyone—even the government cannot power the only State broadcasting network and yet Ghanaians do not seem to be in agreement when it comes to taking to the street to protest against this unbearable situation the country finds itself in.
Most of the Ghanaian media houses are operating on plants and generators and it’s causing a leg and a arm–just to be able to keep going. But how long can they do this for?
