Ghana’s ‘last man standing’ in continental competition, Glorious Accra Hearts of Oak; are set to take on Mali’s AS Djoliba in the final qualification round of this year’s CAF Confederations Cup.
Hearts, sometimes dubbed ‘continental club masters’, are just two games away from entering the money zone of the competition; the group stage level which they haven’t reached in any CAF competition since the ill-fated Champions League campaign of 2009.
Despite being kind of a mess locally, they’ve unexpectedly shined on the continent, and would be hoping to take this unexpected run just one step further to reach the money zone.
Djoliba of Mali, however, are the very tough opponents standing between Hearts and progression. The Malians are experienced campaigners in this competition, finalists only two years ago and having beaten Angola’s PetroJet to get to this stage.
But Hearts had to navigate their own tough game, beating Senegal’s Ngor both home and away. That should count for something, and an exciting but closely fought game should unravel in Bamako tonight.
Kickoff is 1700 GMT, and good luck to Herbert Addo and his boys.
