Often we get hung up on the use of religion as a foil for terrorism, although the misogyny infused in it is just as bad.

People like to ignore it, but both the bible and Quran regard women as second class citizens. That reflects attitudes at the time both were written, and as we progress some cultures have outgrown those attitudes whilst others continue to remain mired in their despicable practices.

Islamic societies mainly continue to remain mired in unbelievable misogyny. Recently a Saudi Arabian woman who got raped was sentenced to jail time and some lashes because she was in the company of a strange man when the incident occurred.

This case is no less tragic, perhaps more so. An Afghan woman was raped by her cousin’s husband, and then got sentenced to 2 years in prison for adultery. Following an appeal, the sentence was increased to 12 years. She later received a presidential pardon following worldwide outrage.

She was 16 at the time, and the rape got her pregnant. Her family said she had shamed them because she was unmarried and had gotten pregnant, and her only hope of living a normal life in the kind of society was to get married to the father of her child.

So she did that, in 2013. And at this point has three children for the man who raped her as a 16 year old even whilst married to her own cousin.

CNN interviewed her, where she and her husband justified the decision. At this point, they both insist the rape never happened.

It’s a sad story, marrying and having children for the one who once raped you. The problem is it isn’t an isolated incident, but the norm under the countries living under such oppressive laws for women.

Interestingly, Deuteronomy 22:28-29 in the bible describes this exact situation. That means the two biggest Abrahamic religions both endorse this story. Chew on that for a while.
