5. You Begin to Miss Everything Back Home Including the Bad Things
While most people back home on a dinner out will opt for pizza, fried rice and the many Chinese dishes, those who really have the real deal in Europe and America run away from such dishes—it becomes so special when you get the chance to eat ‘wakyee’ or ‘Kenkey’.
Would you want to live in a country where you can only eat your favourite food occasionally? Even that, you have to struggle with finding the true required ingredients if you are doing the cooking yourself—and if you are buying it, a small ‘plate of wakyee’ can go as high as 15 Euros and mostly, tastes awful.
Apart from food, you begin to miss everything back home—including hearing people speaking your language. Suddenly, you begin to smile and pay close attention when you hear someone speaking a Ghanaian language on the bus or train.
Things that did not mean anything to you back home begin to take a special place in your life and even though you have numerous HD and quality TV programmes, you begin to yearn for the silly poorly produced GTV programmes and their bad production quality.
When I visited Ghana this December, I was shocked to see my Uncle’s radio always locked on BBC when those of us in Europe run for Okay Fm, Peace Fm and the rest…So just as living in Ghana (anywhere in Africa) sucks, living in Europe or America is even worse…
