Let’s for a minute forget the fact that we do not have electricity in Ghana and pretend everything is alright—even that, which reasonable person would invest 6 million dollars into any enterprise which he would gain 1.5 million dollars should things go as planned?

This is exactly what Ghana’s government did—the Government has revealed that a total of $5.717.869 was spent on Ghana’s preparation and participation in the 2015 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament in Equatorial Guinea.

Note that the 16 finalists of this year’s AFCON in Equatorial Guinea were given a total of 10 million dollars with the eventual winner taking home earning $1.5 million.

So even if we had won the cup; we would have taken $1.5 million home—and yet, we decided to second about 6 million dollars to chase it.

If this is not insanity at the highest level, then it’s surely wickedness or both. Why are our leaders doing this to us?

Living in Ghana has become hell—and I have not even talked about education or running a business in a country where this is no power. Yet, we seem to always find a lot of money when it comes to football; as if our national focus and interest dwell on this sports which mainly benefits already rich footballers and their many concubines.[sociallocker]

In breaking down the expenses, the Youth and Sports Minister-Mahama Ayariga revealed that the Ministry spent $4,774,519.19 on preparation and GHC 3,242,580.00 on Ghana’s participation in the AFCON.

According to the Minister, out of the amount, $932,740 and $3,242,580.00 were approved by the Government for boarding and lodging, air-fair, per diem, friendly matches, and other expenses of the team for its training camp in Seville, Spain.

He added that, $648,640 was also approved for per diem allowances, boarding and lodging and other expenses for the players and the officials of for the tournament phase. Another, $3,224,139.20 was approved for the bonuses and honorarium for the players, the technical and management team, as well as other officials of the team.

Now, what does the ordinary tax paying and hard working Ghanaian get from this? Absolutely nothing—and still, the ordinary Ghanaian cannot even be provided with electricity which he/she has paid for.

What a country!

Listen to what the Sports Minister had to say when he was even questioned on this…

  1. So illogical…so they are able to spend $6 million dollars on footballers which don’t help Ghana in any way but are not able to sort out the electricity, water, sanitation, employment problems, and so on. Wow, this is the problem with governments.
