5. We Do Not Understand Politics: I love politics but I hate its accompanying anti-intellectual culture when it comes to its practice in Ghana. Politics should be about policies, ideologies and working machineries—not some sort of permanent political affiliations come what may.
In Britain, someone can vote Labour into power based on their manifesto or intended policies and if down the line they fail to deliver, this same person can go as extreme as voting UKIP in the next election. People do not sell their conscience by virtue of political affiliations. In fact, I would say people belong to policies and not political parties…
In Ghana, my mother is NPP and she will forever be NPP—I do not see her changing her affiliation even if the NPP is unable to perform. This way, there is no fire on the butt of the leaders when they are in power because they will always have their credulous supporters and defenders.
Our understanding of politics is thick—and that is one of the major problems why we are in this deep sh*t hole. We vote to make the numbers and not necessary based on any ideological or policy excellence.
