The Nigerian elections are upcoming and the keenly contested elections feature the incumbent Goodluck Jonathan and General Buhari.
As is common quite amongst African politicians, Jonathan took a trip to Winners Chapel to worship with Oyedepo and his guys. Reportedly the world’s wealthiest pastor and a known ally of Goodluck; Oyedepo is reported to have made a statement which has since polarised the Nigerian public on social media and other platforms.
Several of the countries’ online platforms report the Winner’s Chapel patriarch made the following statement during the service with the President present: “We will open the gates of hell on those who oppose you”
As a known ally of the President a little measure of support is expected, but going so far as to pledge to open the gates of hell on his opponents seems a tad extreme.
As a leader of such a vast congregation who worship the very ground he walks on he is certain to be a huge influence, but such a statement from where I’m sitting looks counterproductive.
Of course there are the deluded masses who would just shrug it off and continue their hero-worship, but there are bound to be a huge chunk who would realise how problematic it is that a Man of God can say this, during a service no less!
I love that God is so generous he gives one of his servants the keys to purgatory.
