The Day My French Disappeared | From Amsterdam to Brussels On A One Way Ticket…

Amsterdam to Brussels

Being a blogger makes it possible to travel with your work—meaning you can work from any part of the world provided there is internet connection.

It has been pretty awful in the UK; the daily wet weather has become a disease and as such when a friend who was visiting the UK suggested we run off to Amsterdam, I was super excited.

My friend purchased 3 single-way airline tickets and together with a certain Ghanaian artiste, we jumped on the next available flight to Amsterdam—hoping to run away from the wet weather and catch some pending business deals out there.

When we got to Amsterdam, the artiste was picked up (heading to Spain). We then realized we needed to catch a train to Brussels and that was when I asked; why didn’t we fly straight into Brussels then?

I cannot speak a word of Dutch and neither can by travelling buddy so we decided to try our luck with English, hoping to catch someone who could point us to where we would catch a train to Brussels.

After few minutes, we found ourselves buying another one way ticket to Brussels where we had scheduled a business meeting with returning from hiatus Ghanaian High-life artist, Harry King Abban.

The train journey from Amsterdam to Brussels was a damn pain in the butt; spending about 3 and half hours on a certain snail train which passed through Den hag, Antwerp and countless stations…

We finally arrived in Brussels and after having bragged about being fluent in French, we needed to speak to someone to help us find the right bus or train to our final stop—so my travel buddy pushed me to the task.

I approached a young man and suddenly, every French sentence my teacher taught me at Primary School in Ghana disappeared. What the heck, my travelling buddy laughed…

I decided to try it again with the next approaching person and after throwing out the usual ‘bonsoir’, the French disappeared again…

It became obvious I cannot really speak any damn French. Therefore, we had to start looking for someone who could understand us in English.

Eventually, we found our saviour who pointed us to the right direction—and when finally got to our destination, it was raining and even colder than the UK.

Definitely, we’ve jumped from frying pan to fire.

We will be heading to Apeldoorn today—still on our mini continental trip even though we cannot speak any French or Dutch at all…

If the updates on GhanaCelebrities.Com is slow for the next few days, remember I may be somewhere struggling to put two French words together to be able to just buy food.
