It looks like the Ghana Premier League is coming back soon as the court case holding up its resumption has been resolved, albeit temporarily.

Before every league season begins, the GFA holds its annual congress to discuss all issues arising from the old season and pertaining to the upcoming one. A dispute regarding the relegation of Alhaji Grunzah’s King Faisal saw them heading to court, thus securing an injunction against the convening of congress.

Without congress, a new season could not begin.

The Accra Human Rights Court hearing the case ruled that the injunction against congress be lifted, thus freeing the GFA to begin preparations for the new season.

The FA has thus announced December 30 as the day for this year’s congress, with the league to commence a week later on January 7, 2015; as there’s barely any time to waste.

The long wait has had a toll on most of the local clubs, who have had to keep their players camped and continuously training for a competition no one was sure would even go ahead. The costs, without any match day revenue to offset it have been astronomical, even for the giants like Hearts and Kotoko.

This news would pave way for the season, bring relief to the clubs, and give local football lovers something to look forward to.

The substantive case involving King Faisal is still being heard, and the court has ordered for a special dispensation for the club to be automatically granted Premier League status if they win the case.

Obviously the local league is not what it once was, but it’s still a notable pastime for a significant portion of football fans; and without it to keep the talent pool running, the relative success the Black Stars have enjoyed in recent times would dry out soon.
