We all vividly remember the events surrounding the flight of $4million in cash to striking Black Stars players in Brazil, and the ridicule the incident exposed Ghana to on the world stage.
In fact the incident became so popular Hollywood are planning to make a movie about it.
That incident and several others have been the subject of the Dzamefe Commission, which has been sitting for months now on a quest to find out what really happened and eventually (not really), devise some solutions on how to best avoid similar incidents in the future.
That money that was flown to Brazil was in fact a loan from the government to the Ghana Football Association, as FIFA are in charge of paying those monies. The check of income accrued by the Black Stars ill-fated escapades in Brazil has arrived; and already a protracted ‘custody’ battle is set to ensue between the Ministry of Sports and the Ghana Football Association.
The FA on Thursday returned the $4million owed the government to the ministry, but an unforeseen twist saw the Dzamefe Commission order the football governing body to turn over the entire sum received from FIFA ($8million) for safekeeping; at least until the commission finishes its findings and then a decision can be made on what to do with the funds.
The GFA has said they have received the letter, and that the Executive Committee would make a decision on what response to give.
Knowing this FA, and the FIFA rules concerning governmental interference in football matters, I find it almost impossible to see them complying with this directive.
So what triggered this position from the committee? Does the nation have any claim over the money the Black Stars made, would the money be any safer in the Ministries’ coffers than in the GFA’s coffers?
Another point of contention surrounds the eventual use the money would be put to. The Ghana Football Association intends to plunge the extra funds into football development, whilst the Ministry is of the position that it should be used to develop a variety of sports: most of which could really use some cash injection, and not just football.
So whilst the two behemoths struggle over some loose $4million, the rest of us can only watch and marvel. After all whoever gets final custody in this divorce; it’s highly unlikely all of the money would be put to its intended use.
