Watching the movie Double Cross at the Greenwich Odeon Cinema in London on Friday, my first thought was, they seem to have given away all the goodies in the trailer so what else could possibly interest me….or so I thought.
I’m going to start with the pleasantries because of course pointing out the trash or the critical points is a simple task where reviews are concerned.
Following the screening of the movie when the audience learnt that Double Cross was D.R. Kuffour’s first movie we erupted into applause.
In true African style, the film-makers did drag out a lot of the scenes that could have easily have been shortened. The movie had all the factors that keep an African crowd satisfied and engaged including a very pleasing sound track, I couldn’t quite keep still in my seat at some points.
There were a few gasps, laughs and shouts from the crowd during the screening…I won’t do you the disservice of giving away any plots or twits but certainly, you most definitely will not have a clue what unfolds in this romantic action comedy. Emphasis on the romance…I was entirely convinced by some of the intense attraction that developed between some of the characters. A member in the audience even asked during the Q&A if this was INDEED acting. It was that convincing.
Dumelo’s character, Danny Frimpong is as you expect, charming, smart and a little hard to resist so you could almost sympathise with Ama K’s character-Effie Howard’s predicament. Having Co-produced the movie, Ama K was not taking her role lightly—-confident, smart, sassy but vulnerable all at the same time.
Need I give you opinion on Adjetey Anang? He had a great ability to convince viewers of the conviction of his imprisonment. I was however disappointed by the lack of his appearance in the movie.
I know you want to hear the real deal so I’ll give it to you straight.
The premiere did not start on time. This is an all time issue of all the African premieres I’ve attended. I assumed it would be an hour or so late at the very most, we were asked to arrive at 8pm the movie screening took place at around 11.30pm. Not good.
There were also a technical difficulty during the movie but that really was not a deal breaker for me. These are points for future African movie organisers to consider. Movie enthusiasts are accustomed to the high quality UK cinema experience therefore the late start and interruptions were not taken so lightly.
I would like to believe they redeemed themselves by indulging us with a short and lively Q&A session at the end. The one question that myself and my plus one had was…was this based or inspired by real events? Then Dumelo of course kept us sweet by planting an unexpected kiss on Ama’s lips.
Check out the photos below from the premiere…
