For the third time, Nana Addo Danwah Akuffo Addo has been elected as the flag bearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP). Nana Akuffo Addo, who managed to secure an overwhelming victory, contested against Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen (a former Minister of Trade and Industry in the Kuffuor administration) and Francis Addai-Nimoh (Member of Parliament for Mampong).
Out of the total number of votes cast by over 140,000 delegates in the 276 constituencies across the country, Nana Akuffo Addo had 117, 413 votes, Alan Kyerematen had 5,908, whilst Addai-Nimoh pulled 1,128. Statistically, this represents 94.35 %, 4.75% %, and 0.91% % respectively.
In 2008 and 2012, Nana Akuffo Addo led the NPP to contest for the presidential seat in the country’s general elections but lost on those two occasions to John Evans Atta Mills and John Dramani Mahama respectively who contested on the tickets on the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
According to some of the delegates interviewed, Nana Akuffo Addo has over the time proved to be a very loyal member of the party than the other two contenders. As one of them puts it, “it’s time to reward him for his outstanding loyalty to the party.”
Even though Nana Akuffo Addo won the election by a huge margin, some of the party’s supporters are still not happy. This is because they are of the view that Alan Kyerematen and Addai-Nimoh did not even deserve to get a single vote out of the total votes cast.
They are very hopeful that the elected flag bearer, Nana Addo Dankwah Akuffo Addo, will lead the party to the ‘promised land’ in 2016 and deliver Ghanaians from the ‘torture’ and ‘slavery’ they (Ghanaians) are going through from the current ruling party – NDC.
In your opinion, do you think Nana Akuffo Addo is the right person to lead the New Patriotic Party (NPP), after losing twice in the country’s general elections?
