The image of the old lady as a witch stereotype is one that has been immortalised by several cultural and religious beliefs in Ghana over the years, and the advent of the modern film industry has elevated the stereotype to levels where it’s almost a universally regarded fact.
The stereotype often depicts a wizened up, bitter old shrew, who cannot stand the happiness of anyone else. They carry out wicked acts out of sheer malice, irrespective of the relation of the victim to themselves. The final piece of the puzzle is their Harry Potter style brooms which they can use to transport themselves anywhere they want.
A recent occurrence in the Eastern Region has brought all this to life, and more. A Daily Guide report depicts the casting out of the demons out of a 67 year old self confessed witch, which if true means the most powerful spiritualist since Jesus Christ is hiding out somewhere in the Eastern Region of Ghana.
The Prophet in question is a certain Prophet Owusu Agyeman Prempeh, founder and leader of the Ebenezer Healing Church of God at Akyem Oda. In what was believed to be a three hour session, he cast out the demons from the witch, which led to the digging up of some good old witch memorabilia: to wit a pot containing fresh human blood and a heart, a live snake, a spear, a locked padlock, three wedding rings, and some currency including the new and old Ghana Cedis, as well as some US Dollars.
For those of us not particularly well versed in symbology, the recently delivered witch explained everything during her confessions, and you might want to sit down for this one: the spear was her spiritual murder weapon, the heart was that of her late son, the snake was her very own broom for flying- including voyages to the US were she acquired the dollars in the pot- and the wedding rings were seized from relatives, all of whose marriages subsequently collapsed.
Honestly I’ve got to say that’s the most inefficient use of a flying snake in the history of flying snakes.
Briefing the media, the Prophet said the woman came to his church to challenge him, and during prayers she fell down and started begging for forgiveness, revealing herself as the queen mother of Ajuobe witches.
Apparently a lot of other witches of varying skill had been sent to challenge the man of God and all failed, so as a last resort the queen herself went in to complete the task.
After her nefarious purpose was revealed, she begged for deliverance, which led to the whole ceremony outlined earlier, which quite fortuitously enough happened to be witnessed by several journalists.
The Prophet, after his work was done, further told the journalists that he had cast over 100 demons since beginning his work at his church, with witches from several other parts of Ghana, who all withered under his oh so powerful prayer skills.
Interestingly, for our country Ghana a situation like this is quite a more common occurrence than you might think. Incidents like this happen on live television every single day in many different churches, though it seems they all could learn quite a few tips on the theatrical from our beloved Prophet Agyeman Prempeh.
