The Black Stars preparation for Saturday’s game against Germany is in full swing, a statement from the Ghana Football Association has revealed.
The Black Stars lost 2-1 to the USA in heartbreaking fashion in their first game on Monday night, and the aftermath of that game has seen several issues rear their head in the camp of the team.
Initial reports from the team’s camp in Macieo was that the team was in a dejected mood after the loss, and the side flew straight back to Macieo after the game without even stopping for any respite in their hotel in Natal.
Then a report came out claiming mutiny and discontent in the team’s camp, particularly from some senior players and towards the head coach-Kwesi Appiah.
Speaking after the game on Monday, Kevin Prince Boateng expressed surprise over the decision to start him from the bench, stating the coach must have known what he was doing; in a not too veiled dig at Kwesi Appiah.
But the GFA has officially come out, claiming the reports of a revolt were untrue. All 23 players were on hand for the training session after the report of discontent in camp.
“We wish to assure Ghanaians that coach Kwesi Appiah and all his players have shifted their focus to the match against Germany on Saturday, keen on winning the match to revive the Black Stars chances of progressing to the knockout stage” The statement said.
Obviously the GFA would come out and deny such an event took place, and a full blown mutiny is unlikely to have taken place: but Boateng’s comments after the game show some dissatisfaction with the tactics employed during the game and the players are not alone in having those reservations.
Kwesi Appiah brought this on himself, with his decision to bench some of his best players and his not so convincing explanation after the game. Hopefully he would rectify those blunders in Saturday’s game, as failure to get a result would see the Stars’ exit the world cup at the group stages for the first time in our history.
Reports from the team’s camp since the end of Monday’s game give cause for some cautious optimism. There was rife disappointment with Monday’s result, and since then efforts has been redoubled in the subsequent training sessions.
Meanwhile Kwesi Appiah himself has come out to say he has learnt from his mistakes, and that he would endeavour not to repeat them in order for his team to gain a fitting result against Germany.
After the loss against the USA, there was little doubt as to who the majority of the blame lay with, and the head coach responded to those claims.
“We need to go back and see our mistakes and correct them” He said of Monday’s game.
“We’re going to have to play well against Germany and I know we’ll give them a good game”
Brave words from the Black Stars coach, but with the form Germany has shown so far and the Stars lethargic performance against USA, a vast improvement would be needed or Ghanaians would have to find a different team to support by the end of the group stages.
