For a few days now, news of versatile music duo P-Square (Peter Okoye and Paul Okoye) breaking up has been making quick and disturbing rounds…Ironically, just a few days ago I was discussing D-Banj and Don Jazzy’s infamous split with a Nigerian friend. Human beings are naturally territorial—greedy and possessive. But sometimes we cannot do it alone, we need that magic of two heads and that is what the success of most music duos/ groups have been based on.
When D-Banj was at his peak with Don Jazzy, they virtually owned the African music scene, making hits, performing on stages across Africa and breaking banks. But they let it get to their heads; they started thinking they were too much to be pulled down so they started playing with their heavy weight position in the industry. They thought they could never be replaced.
So after many unnecessary misunderstandings which they were supposed to solve and continue working together, they decided to split. What has become of D-Banj today? When was the last hit? Is he still the biggest artiste in Africa? They forgot talented young boys like Wizkid, Davido, Olamide and more were waiting for their 15 minutes to take over.
In Ghana, let us not forget Wutah and Praye. The question is; who and what at all gets into their minds to split up just when things are going well? Only to end up struggling for one single hit…That’s it for that recap, lest I digress; let’s go back to P-Square.
I cannot believe how two twin brothers who have made good music consistently for ten years, suddenly want to part ways. According to recent news, the duo have discussed and called in a lawyer to share their assets. Can they not at least learn from other people’s mistakes or do they really badly need to make their own mistakes?
Whatever the problem may be, I think P-Square must find a quiet solution to their problems. If they breakup, the chances of them having any more hits is basically going to go down the drain—since the appeal of the group is in both of them. They are a brand, a business and the chances are many corporate contracts they have as a duo will be severed.
If their wives also want to continue enjoying the success of their husbands, they better talk to them to stay together. The evidence is abysmal. Most of the music groups that break up practically end their career with that single move. So P-Square, my opinion is simple; stay together!
