When it comes to the Ethiopian Suri tribe, these enormous lip plates are regarded as signs of beauty.

If you are wondering how such lip plates are fixed; “when girls hit puberty they have their bottom two teeth removed in a bizarre ritual before a small hole is cut into their bottom lip.A clay disc is then inserted into the hole, which is steadily increased, stretching the lip” says Daily Mail.

In the culture of this tribe, the larger the lip plate the more cows a girl’s father can demand in dowry when it is time to get married – usually 40 for a small plate and 60 for a larger one.

And guess what the men do for their puberty, they just paint themselves as a ritual, less painful and dangerous…
