The Ghana music industry has really come a long way. Each week, we are being greeted by hit tracks from our well known musicians. Music, like writing, isn’t easy as others might think. For an artiste to come out with great tunes, it requires passion, creativity, etc on the part of him or her.
We’ve come across several musicians globally who compose good songs, but fade out from the system as time passes. Ghana, as a country is not an exception. There have been some musicians who were doing awesome in the game, but now ‘struggling’ to make hits. Let’s take a look at some of them.
Asem
The man who studied journalism, turned rapper is one of the brilliant musicians and songwriters the country has produced. Coming into the limelight with ‘Give Me Blow’, Asem was very consistent in the delivery of hit songs. With his background in communication, he has control over words and very good at throwing punch lines.
However, after releasing ‘Bye Bye’ which he featured Kwabena Kwabena, Asem has been struggling to come out with great tunes. With fans not patronising his songs as they used to, he even went ahead to put his latest album (Tough Times Don’t Last) on internet for free download.
Tic Tac
“Philomena Kpiting3, g33g3.” Any individual who has followed Hiplife from the 90s will be familiar with this phrase in Tic Tac’s ‘Philomena’ track. As one of the pioneers of Hiplife, he has contributed immensely to the success of the genre.
Tic Tac has many great songs to his credit. I remember how one of his songs (Kwani Kwani) brought myself and a girl together when I was a small boy. Tic Tac has tried to remain relevant in the game in terms of songs, but unfortunate for him, his new releases are really ‘hustling’ to make it to the top.
Bradez
I don’t know if I should call the Oseikrom duo Bradez or by their individual names. Ever since a member (Kunta Kinte) got sick, Stone has been the very active member of the group. Although Kunta is back on his feet, his presence has not been felt that much when it comes to collaborations and performances.
Bradez became a household name after releasing ‘One Gallon’. It didn’t end there for the group. Their popularity heightened after churning out great songs like ‘Flashe’, ‘Simple’, and ‘Dondoo’. It is understandable that the short break taken by the group during Kunta’s sickness affected them within that period. However, the duo is now finding it difficult to penetrate once again after the comeback of Kunta.
D. Cryme
Whereas others call him the ‘Fresh Boy’, many refer to him as the ‘One Hit Maker’. As for freshness, he is, and the ladies love him for that, but as for music, hmmm. Who never danced to the ‘Kill me shy’ song? Some people actually say he became established in the game after that song was churned out.
Dr Cryme has since then released several songs that haven’t been massive as the ‘Kill Me Shy’ did. To set a standard is quite easy, but to maintain or take the standard to the next level is where the work actually is.
Praye
After emerging as the winners of the Nescafe African Revelation – Ghana in 2004, the name ‘Praye’ was all over the place. Three talented young dudes (Eugene Baah, Steven Fiawoo, and Nana Kwame) made up the group.
Their debut album, Mfitiasie (Beggining), was a success with many hit tracks. Whenever ‘Praye’ releases a song, you definitely know that song is heading straight to the top. Things took to the opposite direction when Nana Kwame (Praye Tenten or Kente) left the group. The remaining members of the group have since then tried to bring back to life their career as it was, but to no avail.
Zigi
Is he really around? Making some hits might be easy for some musicians, but being consistent becomes a real challenge to them. The Lynx Entertainment signee released a hot banger – ‘You Say Weytin’ which became very popular in Ghana.
Zigi followed it with ‘Amanda’, another song that also made waves in its time. With great beats, but very few words that make up his songs, lots of people described Zigi as someone who cannot be called a musician. He describes himself as the ‘Prince of Pop’, yet nothing has being heard again from him.
Nana Boroo
Some people seem to experiment with music. The ‘Aha Yede’ hit maker, Nana Boroo is one of the few musicians described by some Ghanaians as not being an effective musician. I still cannot believe a song like ‘Aha Yede’ could fade out from the system, per the popularity and airplay of the song at the time of its release.
Every Tom, Dick, and Harry looked up to Nana Boroo to follow up with such hit songs, but that has not been the case. According to him, he is doing some business in the States and that he will return to do what he does best on the microphone. Meanwhile, all songs he released after ‘Aha Yede’ weren’t all that massive.
