Before some of you jump on me, let me state clearly that I am not in support of skin bleaching, I have not bleached and will never bleach. Self hate to me is the biggest crime a person can commit against herself.
However, am I the only feeling that we are giving too much undeserving attention to the issue of skin bleaching and the many Ghanaian entertainers engaged in this self hate act?
From the common victim-Yvonne Nelson to the others, the media together with us all continue to lambast them, repeating to them the dangers of skin bleaching as if they are some kids who do not already know this.
What I think is that, if people will bleach, they will and no amount of hatred, threat whatsoever will stop them. Most of these bleachers know of all the negative consequences just like those who smoke know smoking can kill, yet they will do it.
What I am saying is that, instead of us losing sleeps and bashing these people who are skin bleaching, we should rather channel our energy to promoting dark/brown skin; those who are not bleaching to make them feel special. This will have a great reverse effect.
Instead of let’s say bashing or insulting Yvonne Nelson for bleaching, we can commend and praise Ama K Abebrese for holding tight on her nice dark skin and give her more attention than the former. That way, we positively put Ama K. up the ladder, telling our kids that she is the right role model while slowly erasing Yvonne Nelson and the others off the market.
What we are doing now is plastering bleachers all over in our minds, newspapers, blogs, facebooks and leaving those who are doing it right behind. Who will our kids see more?
This is something I have been thinking about and I hope others buy into it. What do you think?
