The president of the Musicians Union of Ghana (MUSIGA), Bice Osei Kuffuor, popularly known in the showbiz world as Obour, has explained why the name of this year’s Ghana’s week-long music festival has been changed from Ghana Music Week to GMW.

Anybody who has been following very closely the activities of MUSIGA would be on familiar terms with the controversy surrounding the said name – Ghana Music Week.

According to Obour, the executives of the musician’s union were informed last year after the maiden edition of the music week that some members of the union had gone ahead to register the Ghana Music Week at the Registrar General’s Office as their own.

This, he described as very sad and unfortunate. Hence, there was the need to opt for another name, which is the GMW instead of the Ghana Music Week.

Although the President of MUSIGA never mentioned any name, any person who has been tracking the development of this issue from scratch would know that he was referring to “the man insane”, Kwaw Kesse, and his manager, Fennec Okyere.

The rightful owner of the music week festival has been a matter of concern since last year. While MUSIGA had been claiming ownership because the union originated it (but without any document), the MadTime Entertainment team has also been claiming ownership of the same event (with documents).

Few weeks ago, Kwaw Kesse alongside his manager were interviewed by Akwasi Aboagye on Peace Fm’s Entertainment Review. According to the two, they had had several meetings with the executives of MUSIGA but nothing beneficial comes up after the various meetings.

They went ahead to made known to the public that they will sit down with their legal team to take action against MUSIGA whenever the union uses that name for any event.

I still marvel at how MUSIGA could come up with such a brilliant music festival without deeming it right to register it. At least, the union should have known better. The name Ghana Music Week can still remain and be used for the week-long music festival. All that it takes is for the two teams to come together, solve matters the right way, and arrive at a consensus.

Now that we all know that we have GMW and Ghana Music Week, I would love to know the difference between the two. Is GMW not the abbreviation of Ghana Music Week, or it means something else?
