Like clothes and music, hair also has its own trends. For a long time, the itch to have long, soft, glamorous hair led to the popularity of a variety of hair extensions in the market. Nobody can forget the ‘Brazilian hair’ rave and how this gorgeous but super expensive mane swept Ghana like a plague.
Everyone was wearing it and those who couldn’t afford it were doing everything possible to get their hands on it, fake or original! Even the guys got caught in the hype! Boyfriends started complaining about how much these hair extensions were creating immense damage to their pockets and even their relationships.
For as long as I can remember, extensions have been the most commonly preferred hair option for most black women. It ranged from sew-ins to braids, to wigs and even clips. Now though, all that is changing. I never thought I would see the day that the ‘Brazilian hair’ hype would die down. I always thought that even if it ever did, it would be replaced by another hair substitute that ladies would latch on to.
Now, it is becoming increasingly popular to see ladies rocking their natural hair. I was scanning through my Instagram page just the other day and noticed that a vast majority of African women are either talking about going natural or have decided to give up the weaves and embrace their ‘real’ hair, void of all the chemicals and products!
Quite a number of my friends have gotten ‘the big chop’ and claim they are absolutely loving their new looks. The most popular reasons were that hair extensions are great but after a while, it just gets so tiring that you just wish you can do something with your own hair that would be just as fabulous.
The natural hair ‘craze’ is indeed a movement and has taken the web by storm with Youtube videos, blogs and natural hair care experts inventing new styles and switching it up every now and then. It is difficult to determine how it started but with celebrities like Lydia Forson, Becca and quite recently Nana Ama McBrown rocking fabulous natural hair styles, it’s not surprising to see that it is becoming so popular now.
I am a HUGE fan of extensions but honestly, it’s about time we accept our kinky curls and learn to love it. If we take good care of our hair, we can actually train it to do our bidding. It can be frustrating initially, but if keep at it you will be amazed at how easy it is!
So instead of pounding away on your head when your fingers can’t get to that itch under that weave (we have all been there before) take it all off and appreciate what God gave you.
