I respect Kweku Baako and he has the right to air his opinions like every other person.
But to suggest that, a dictator and champion of nepotism-Kwame Nkrumah, who had no respect for the rule of law as it can be clearly seen in his enactment of the Preventive Detention Act, by any means is GREATER than Mandela—is pure absurdity.
Again, Kwame Nkrumah and Nelson Mandela belong to different era of time with different political situations, it is therefore even wrong to compare the two men. Even if you decide to go ahead of a comparison, I do not see how Nkrumah would ever be greater than Mandela.
According to Graphic Ghana;
he Editor of the New Crusading Guide, Mr Abdul Malik Kweku Baako says Kwame Nkrumah was the greatest African.
He was contributing to a debate on whom of South Africa’s first black President, Nelson Mandela, and Ghana’s first President, Kwame Nkrumah, was the greatest African.
The debate, which has gained grounds since Mandela died last week, has divided many Ghanaians.
Mr Baako said while Mandela could be described as one of the greatest Africans, he did not measure up to Nkrumah.
“The greatest leader, for me, was Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah”, Mr Baako said on Peace FM’s ‘Kokroko’ on Wednesday.
He said Ghana became the first country in Sub-Sahara Africa largely due to Nkrumah’s efforts.
Ghana’s independence, he said, had an “electrifying, catalytic effect on the black race.”
Mr Baako added that while Nkrumah was the greatest African, Mandela was the continent’s most famous individual.
Kwame Nkrumah, (21 September 1909 – 27 April 1972) was the leader of Ghana and its predecessor state, the Gold Coast, from 1951 to 1966. Overseeing the nation’s independence from British colonial rule in 1957, Nkrumah was the first
President of Ghana and the first Prime Minister of Ghana.
An influential 20th-century advocate of Pan-Africanism, he was a founding member of the Organization of African Unity and was the winner of the Lenin Peace Prize in 1963.
Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela, 18 July 1918 – 5 December 2013) was a South African anti-apartheid revolutionary, politician, and philanthropist who served as President of South Africa from 1994 to 1999.
He was South Africa’s first black chief executive, and the first elected in a fully representative democratic election.
I don’t think kwame nkrumah spent 27 yrs in prision for his course.with that being said I don’t know why anyone would bring up the frivilous argument of who was greater than who .
it Is simply not necesary and a bloody waste of time both men had similar ideals and that was freedom from opression (of any kind, although one of them swayed a little from that ideal at a point in time due to paranoia which later turned out to be justified, well you know the story… ) anyway that should be the main focus and not who is greater than who. shame on kweku baako for being so shallow and petty at a time like this. trying to cause trouble. smh
@jazzi,
Prez Kwame Nkrumah almost freed and united the whole of Africa including South Africa and Madiba Mandela long ago, but Prez Kwame Nkrumah was over thrown by enemies within Africa. Prez Kwame Nkrumah was the greatest African after Hon Marcus Garvey
Dr. Nkrumah’s vision was for the whole Africa (black Man) including Madiba Mandela. Nkrumah was not imprisoned for 27 year for his course but was overthrown, and died for the course. He got the cancer from the Britain and American in sighted assassination attack at Kolungugu.
While Dr. Nkrumah was thinking and planning for Africans including Mandela, Madiba was planned for South Africans. Was he not receiving foreign dignitaries while South Africans were killing other African Nationals in SA. Thanks to President Thabo Mbeki, Bishop Tutu. Look at the numerous other African nationals in Ghana during Dr Nkrumah’s time
I really admire the works of Mr. Mandela but i will always have a special place in my heart for Dr. Nkrumah as a Ghanaian. I would not describe him as my fellow Ghanaian ( the Blogger) did. Nkrumah had his own flaws and so did Mr. Mandela. But they are all great leaders from which we can draw inspiration from. The outstanding seeds these men of honor sew is what we stand to reap today. I would suggest that if we cannot say good things about them, we should desist from labeling them.

Both men are legends but if am ask to choose one I will definitely go for Kwame nkrumah due to his leadership and charisma in Ghana and Africa as a whole.
God bless Ghana

@Ayi,my brother thanks ,you know a lot .
Chris, you’re just a little boy who doesn’t know much so please don’t spew nonsense about matters that you obviously have no clue about. Mandela was not perfect and had a violent past (despite all his latter greatness) , and Nkrumah’s life was constantly under bomb threat by his jealous countrymen before his eventual overthrow by these same traitorous individuals thru the help of the US and its corrupt CIA apparatus.
NKRUMAH WAS AN AFRICAN WORRIOR.. HE HAS THE HEART OF AN AFRICAN MAN..BLOOD OF OUR GREAT GRAND FATHERS. HE IS GREATER THAN MANDELA BUT MANDELA HAS ENOUGH PATIENCE THAN HIM AND THUS WHAT THE DIFFERENCE IS..
NKRUMAH WAS INPATIENTL WHILE MADIBA WAS A SMOOTH MAN. THUS WHY HE LASTED FOR LONG.. NKRUMAH WAS A WARRIOR
@biz,you are absolutely right
Thank you! You spoke my mind.
I agree with the article Mandela was only for the betterment of his country and was a great leader but he was mostly a figure head for the revolution of change in South African. Kwame Nkrumah was very influential in all parts of the world. I do not have this opinion cause I’m ethnocentric but because of his work promotion Pan-African beliefs and ideologies. He had the his willingness and drive to unite Africa. Mandela could have done more since all of Africa looked up to him but he remained a figure head.
Chris I will like you to go into details of OSAGYEFU DR KWAME KRUMAHA’s history it will help you better than basing on a mere rumors of Nkrumah. ,
Whilst Mandela was fighting for his country Nkrumah was fighting for Ghana and Africa ,if Nkrumah was alive ghana will be a better place than this ,FAKE NDC AND NPP WHOSE DUTY IS TO STEAL FROM OMAN GHANA.
DONT JUST WRITE ABOUT MERITS OF MANDELA AND DEMERITS OF NKRUMAH .GO INTO DETAILS OF Nkrumah’s HISTORY ,I MEAN HIS MERITS ,AFRICA AND GHANA WAS ON HIS SHOULDER HE FIGHT AND FIGHT BUT GHANAINS WHO NEVER LIKE NOTHING GOOD DETROYED HIM MASTERMINDED BY BRITISH AND AMERICANS .
Dr. Nkrumah’s vision was for the whole Africa (black Man) including Tata Mandela. Nkrumah was not imprisoned for 27 year for his course but was overthrown, and died for the course. What was Madiba’s vision or agenda for the Black race? Show me at least one.
He got the cancer from the Britain and American insighted assassination attack at Kolongugu. Ghanaians with their deep divisions on tribal line which was fan politically by Anglo-America Empire makes the Twi speaking Ghanaians envious of Dr. Nkrumah and makes Ghanaians not to celebrate him “Akoko besa den ennye Akroma fe da” Secreatly this is why UGCC/NPP is still an oppositions party.
Dr. Nkrumah’s period was a period of two factions in the world politics that fuels the COLD WAR between USSR and Anglo-America. It is even known that during the initial stages of the South African struggle, Mandela believed in ideals of socialism.
Dr. Nkrumah did it all for Ghana. Think of about 62 well built industries, education, and economy, count it. He warned us not to allow the military to rule for they are there to defend our envies has ended us where we are not Dr. Nkrumah.
While Dr. Nkrumah was thinking and planning for Africans including Mandela, Madiba was planned for South Africans. Was He not receiving foreign dignitaries while South Africans were killing other African Nationals in SA? Thanks to President Thabo Mbeki, Bishop Tutu.
Look at the numerous other African nationals in Ghana during Dr Nkrumah’s time. Madiba’s legacy is the South African Xenophobic sentiments and their ministers bullying other African leaders at AU conferences. The legacy is their President undermining Malawi roads.
Nkrumah did not cancelled death sentence to serve as tall wall between the people and crime leading to the present peace Ghana is enjoying. Mandela’s legacy is cancelling death sentence and that leading to rampant criminal activities with foreign nationals being the target.
Dr. Nkrumah still relied on the White man for the professionals that he does not have for the nation building while to Mandela’s South Africa, things of the white man is abusive meanwhile they don’t have the professionals. Youth must read and become interllectuals.
