Ghanaian actor-Ekow Smith Asante has been making headlines for stating that 90% of the ‘Kumawood’ movies are destroying the Ghanaian movie industry. By ‘Kumawood’, I am certain he is talking about those Ghanaian Movies made in Twi—mostly shot and produced in Kumasi.
Though Ekow Smith Asante’s statement has no strong grounds, I think he should have said; Ghana Movie Industry is destroying our eyes as 90% of the movies coming out of Ghana (both English and Twi) are pure nonsense.
You will only watch most of these movies if you are starved and have nothing better to do with your time. Sometimes, I wonder if people are able to sit through an entire Ghanaian movie.
If anything at all, I will place the ‘Kumawood’ movies far above the English productions in terms of satisfaction—as the former succeeds in giving you a good laugh with the latter mostly being a complete waste of your time.
However, the fact remains; the entire Ghanaian movie industry is a JOKE and many of these movie stars are confused when it comes to their status and achievements!
According to Myjoyonline;
Nana Ama Mcbrown says she is disappinted in fellow actor, Ekow Smith-Asante, for condemning movies produced in Kumasi. Ekow Smith-Asante said 90% of the ‘Kumawood’ movies are destroying the Ghanaian movie industry.
Mcbrown told Kojo Preko Danquah on Adom FM last Saturday that “In the first place, I am very disappointed in the personality of Ecow-Smith because I didn’t expect this statement to come from him. We have been doing this with him for a long time, so for him to come out like this, I feel there is something wrong somewhere. If he feels the Akan movies are not to be regarded then why does he think the FIPAG congress was held here in Kumasi and not in Accra.
What it means is that the people in the Akan movie industry are the people doing the work so we have been recognized for that. Our dominance is clear everywhere in the country and beyond. At the moment, Kumawood has more producers than the people who are producing glamour movies so what is he talking about.”
She added “excuse me to say that those who are shooting the glamour movies like the Jackie Appiah’s and the Yvonne Nelson’s are only marketing and selling their images to the world and not anything Ghanaian to the people. What we are doing is rather selling the culture of Ghana to the people better than the glamour movies. What I expected Ekow-Smith to have done was to advise the directors and the producers to work on the quality of the stuff they put out and correcting some of the wrongs in them. He is very close to the directors and the producers because he has worked with them before. So I am shocked that he is saying stuff like this without approaching and telling them that they can do things better.”
Calling herself the “Queen of Kumawood” she stressed that she will be shooting Kumawood movies until ‘God knows when’ because she believes that has made her who she is today.
She commended all producers and directors who are in the ‘Kumawood’ industry describing them as great and talented people with the aim of selling the brand and culture of Ghana.
Nana Ama Mcbrown is a known face in the ‘Kumawood’ movie industry and has won several awards. Notable movies she has featured in include Ama Ghana, Madam Moke, Mmaa Kuo and many hot selling movies on the market.
What do you think?
these so call english movie makers should give us a break or do they think kissing, nudity and sex is what we call movie? nonsense
Bad photography, bad sound, bad directing, bad storyline etc……Is laughter all there is to making movies? Certainly not. Ekow is ABSOLUTELY right. Instead trying to improve, they will all jump on his back. People who never takes criticisms in good faith never improve.
This rigid, non smiling actor who thinks he’s better. Where was he when aki n pawpaw took over with their silly acts? And that Nigerians r doing better? They value their native actors with all their “silly movie titles”..u watch their so called glamour movie n u js get pissed off.. Worry that wtf is going on in d country.
At least the twi industry over do their acts, it releases stress, u laugh, smile n learn ur culture. Ekow smith… Go shoot in Hollywood movies with ur non emotional rigid self.. Wei Nyinaa ye celebrity… Only in Ghana
@Mznitta,I totally agree with you. sometimes when i watch that English movies….am like really thats it??? but with twi movie atleast movie gotta make you laugh some how. weather is poorly produced and directed. I dont remember them saying they are the best in the industry. But they make these make these movies to entertain people.
I will watch Kumawood movie any day at laest as Chris rightly said it can make you laugh your heart out. I will never wast my time watching english movie from Ghana. I agree movies from Ghana are poorly produced and directed but atleast the twi one can put you in a relax mood after hard day’s work because it’s comic nature.
The ghana movie industry is garbage, they dont make meaningful and quality movies so both industries should keep quiet.
I mean, I don’t understand the English actors/tress keep saying a lot of things about the industry, not knowing what they are doing is the same sh#*t… It takes more then a good camera to make a good movie. I only watch Twi movies, as they remind you of your time in GH. Though the production is bad, however, they have good story lines. And It’s Ghana! The Twi movies are what’s going on in Ghana (the stories). Glamour movies!!!!! what is Glamour movies?!?!
