Film-maker Leila Djansi is back and this time, she is not the nonsense on the plate—-she is rather pointing out the nonsensical habit of the many Ghana/Nigeria actors and film makers…
She takes a hit at the unneeded trips these people continue to take with the little money they earn, forgetting that they can use it to improve themselves….
Check out what Leila wrote below…
Do qoute me anywhere on this. It’s about time someone said this. My fellow film industry folks in Ghana and Nigeria, especially actors. Enough with the cars, shoes, bags, clothes and needless vacations.
You don’t do these cos you deserve them but cos of the need to show off and that’s some high level of insecurity you need checked. You spend money you make from doing some crappy material on designers who take that money, go on vacations with their fellow men, whom they have married and have sex with or fellow women… (None of my business tho. Just sayin’).
Instead of sitting by the TV and acquiring an american accent, or seeing your friend off to the airport and going back home doing ‘innit or yeah mehnn’, or heck, traveling to Atlanta for 2 weeks and returning with a new york accent why not spend that money on accent elimination classes? Or invest in a simple program like Rosetta Stone, which helps you become versatile.
It is hard to market African films to the world because the diction is so awkward. Actors don’t speak English comfortably. They prefer make-up and clothes to character enhancing. They can already imagine the red carpets and star treatment. It’s making movie making difficult! Learn from people like Idris Elba, Nicole Kidman, Charlize Theron, Thandie Newton.
They all have their own accents from their countries, but their accent changes with any role they take. Thus they can be British, African, American. I watched a Nigerian film set in 1886 and the King had an American accent. Haba. This is tiring. Really.
Shots are being fired, I totally agree with her
This is way overdue. It is about time someone like her spoke up. All these fake wannabe celebrities who can’t act or even talk clearly in these crappy films really need a reality check. If you take away Ama K and one or two others, all these so-called Ghanaian stars are horrible actors with delusions of grandeur.
I can imagine the faces of some of the actors when they read this. LMAO. She hit the nail right on the head !! Where did she post that tho.. Facebook ? or her blog ? In one movie, this Ghanaian actress can move from an American accent to a British accent to an Australian accent then back to a Ghanaian accent. All in one character. Very distracting, & thats me being modest. Sour truth there, they gotta swallow it & grin like it aint even sour.
@AyyElayy,
Yes, it is quite laughable what these folks think of themselves. For example, you have someone like Majid Michael (whom many consider one of the “best” of the lot) playing two very different roles in “Somewhere In Africa” but “acting” and speaking with no noticeable difference between the two characters except in the loudness or softness of their voices/speaking tones. To top things off, his peers perpetuate this nonsense by voting him as “Best Actor” for this shabby work of a job and Majid then continues to believe in his own hype by telling a US based reporter he is the Al Pacino of African cinema. Tweeeaaa!
@Kk,Majid doesn’t have the LAFA problem though unlike some NAMELESS(left to the readers imagination) actresses and actors. And yeah true Diction is a problem in Ghanaian and the whole African movie industry as a whole! Everybody trying to sound American or British to name a few ….Funny thing i have learnt about Americans is the more you try to talk like them,the harder it is for them to understand you!
Its about time someone said it, am happy it was leila, these wannbes actors look ridiculous and pathetic with their stupid accents fake clothes bags whatever, who are they showing off to anyway? Well done leila!
BOOM!! BOOM!! Goes the cannon and who ever it hits I really hope to God it hits and hits hard(preferably in the tender parts)so that they can see their own madness on tv over and over again.
I hope Nadia is reading this article. She should take note. W ith her fake accent. It is pitiful and annoying to watch her in a film sometimes.
@truth, hahahaaa. U re soo right about Nadia.
Thats why i like the Twi / Akan movies more than the english ones because they dont try to act like westerners but just like ordinary Ghanaians.
@Yahoozeee, hahahaha bor hor biom!!
@Yahoozeee, with the Twitter movies, they’re natural. They don’t fake anything. In a series like strike back, when anybody from any African country is featured u hear their local accent. I really wonder if a Ghanaian accent can be identified
@Mira, *twi*
@Mira, finally someone who likes strike back like I do.
@frog, very interesting……I’m so addicted to it
this weekend, i discovered reelafrica.com and have been watching old ghanaian movies there. i became so sad after watching the old movies like rejected, passions & darkside because I started asking myself that how did we move from such quality movies to the trash we make today? the acting in those movies was so natural, the people wore normal clothes & not the excessive makeup and wigs, their grammar was excellent but they had a Ghanaianaccent. Why cant we go back to those times? hmmm
Well said dear. I stopped watching our “so called” English movies, simply due to the many unneeded accents one can find in one movie! What happen if you speak with US accent? what do you gain?!?!?!
good one there….not only do they have horrible borrowed accents, they ‘throw a lot of shots” too when speaking. a lot of grammatical errors in the movies.
It’s about time…couldn’t be more happier for her making this statement…but even with the twi movies, they fake their accent when they speak English…number 1 example is NANA AMA MCBROWN…she is good in local movies, but home girl English changed over the years quick which makes her unnatural…it’s so horrible how they fake their accents, like DAMN…thank you Ms. Djansi…
I have only two favorite actors n dat is Kenneth okonkwo n mercy johnson. Apart from them i don’t find any good actor or actress i like. I respect uche jombo n i love some of the kumawood actors but the rest of the so called english speaking actors n actress are all villagers( any
OH leila i loooooooooooooooove youuuuuuu………wakaa waka…..ad3in?? All these fake wanabees must be checked….
yvonne nelson….nadia buari…infact all of them………just why cant they be a little bit original?/ whyyyyyyyyyyyy???
this lady still alive? Why shouldn’t they use the ir money they’ve worked hard for. What’s paining her though and I thought she was done with these actors why is she still commenting. Leila Djansi go sit down jor arrrggghhhh!!!
People are always choking coz of nadia’s accent. They can simply go and burn the sea. Who cares if they use thier money for vacation aa, Na u they pay them? Leila, charley, go take a nap before i add u to AMANDA BYNES” UGLY” list. U disrespected our own reputable actress Akofa seidu and it became a court case. nobody said nothing. who the hell do u think you are anyways to be judging ple left n right b’coz u’ve got some links in hollywood?! Go look kraa u too u sell ur soul just like them. Pathetic . Take a nap, and go get a life and stop jumping down ple’s neck. aaba?! Even Naija actresses blowing phony everywhere kraa we no dey talk. metweeeeeee
@Alero, exactly my point! This why people should find handsome men or women to make baby with. Ugly b***s like Djansi have such a low self esteem that they see evil everywhere. She want to be noticed..make she go sit her bony a## down habaa!!!
WHAT A HEELL IS KUMAWOOD KRAAAAAA?! LET THIS LOCALS THINGS GO SIT DOWN SOMEWHERE AND SELL TO THE ILLITERATES CHAI!
Hahaha, shots fired. Most of these actors are broke due to their flamboyant lifestyle. They dont live witihn their means. Most are forced to indulge in illegal activities to support this lifestyle. I can imagine most actors reading this mean mugging. Hahaha. Leila U d best
