All over Ghana, various billboards which are directly and indirectly promoting skin bleaching—-sometimes cunningly called skin toning have been mounted.
Without any strict regulations out there to clamp down on these huge advertisement boards which can be seen by all—including young teenagers who may be struggling to accept their complexion, the number of boards keep increasing.
Award winning Ghanaian actress-Ama K. Abebrese who has in the past spoken against any form of skin bleaching/lightening took to her instagram page 2 days ago to slam down a bleaching billboard advert she came across.
Posting the photo of the billboard (photo below), the actress wrote;
“One of the many #skinbleaching billboards in Ghana. This one uses a non black woman with fair skin, and tells black women that, ‘Your dreams come true’. The message here to black women is that, if you bleach or ‘tone’ your skin to be whiter, then, it will be a dream come true.
It’s not only offensive to women in general but condescending especially to black women. This message will sadly reach many females and especially young girls. Beauty comes in many different skin tones. #saynotoskinbleaching #loveyournaturalskintone #campaign”
If all our Ghanaian celebrities can take such a strong stand against skin bleaching, we are sure an impact can be made.
Following her little campaign against bleaching, Ama K. Abebrese has confidently shared a close-up photo of herself—-probably to tell her fans to be proud of themselves and embrace their skin colour!
