OBS: Judge Says Oscar Pistorius Is free To Leave South Africa After Winning Appeal Over Bail Restrictions

Published by

Oscar Pistorius who is facing murder charges in South Africa has today won an appeal against his bail conditions. Under the new relaxed bail conditions, he is allowed to travel abroad to compete in athletic events.

Judge Bert Bam in South Africa said Pistorius, who is charged with murdering girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp, can now leave the country to compete in international competitions.

According to the Judge, there was no reason Pistorius should not be allowed to leave the country if he was invited to compete abroad.

Judge Bam however added that,  the Olympic and Paralympic athlete must provide authorities with his travel plans at least a week before he leaves the country.

Pistorius, who did not attend the hearing, must also return his passport to the court within 24 hours of returning to South Africa.

His lawyer Barry Roux had asked for several conditions to be relaxed, saying Pistorius – who has been staying with relatives – was effectively under ‘house arrest’.

Mr Roux told North Gauteng High Court that while his client had no immediate plans to compete, he might eventually need to run at track meets again to earn money.

He said Pistorius should be allowed to travel for international meets under ‘controlled’ circumstances, where he would require advanced permission from police and would have to give details of his travel schedule before he left South Africa

It looks like things are going Oscar Pistorius’ way…What do you think?
