Prof. Agyeman Badu Akosa, former director general of the Ghana Health Services (GHS) has appealed to Ghanaian parents to educate their children on sex right from infancy.

He said parents should teach and talk about sex for the next generation of Ghanaians to be professional at it for the betterment of the country. He made the appeal at a forum dubbed “The Sex Talk Forum”, organized by Kaylers Communication at the Kama Conference Hall in Accra. I know some African cultures where indeed they talk about sex. According to Prof. Akosa, whenever someone talked about sex in the country, the whole Christendom rose to speak against that person. The country is behaving as if we are in 1882, he complained. He hinted that 20% of pregnant women in the country are teenagers for not protecting them from sex. Whether you like it or not, your child will be of age and he or she would have sex.

Talk to the child about sex and she would know what to do when she is confronted by the challenge. Prof. Akosa stated that birds, goats and bees have sex, so humans should also be allowed to have sex”, he added.

He emphasized that it would be better and safer if adults talked about sex. “The sex talk forum” was organized to discuss various aspects of sex and reproductive health. It was to create a platform to discuss sexually related issues in the open without fear.
