LIFESTYLE: How Are You Using Your Smartphone, And How Is It Affecting Your Personal Life?

blank

People are spending more time with their mobile devices than they are spending with print media. Adults spending more time with their mobile devices have increased astronomically since 2008.

According to a New York based market research firm, the average adult consumer spends 120 minutes a day on their mobile device, while they spend only 44 minutes with print media, 26 minutes with newspapers, and 18 minutes with magazines.

For those who spend 120 minutes on their smartphones, about 25 minutes is used on browsing the web, 17 minutes on social networking, 13 minutes playing games, and 16 minutes listening to music.

Let’s face it; smart phones are quickly replacing most of our gadgets such as alarm clocks, laptops, and digital cameras.  I don’t remember the last time I used an actual alarm clock. I have been using my phone to set my alarms for years now.  Smartphones are even now replacing books, watches, cd players, radio. One can get almost any information from a smartphone by the touch of a button.  I wake up in the morning, and the first thing I do is to check the weather on my smartphone.

Some smartphones allow you to check for flight delays and traffic.  I am currently in possession of the Samsung Galaxy S3, and I must say I love the phone to death.  It performs a whole lot more than I actually know since I have not taken the time to fully read my manual.   Even with the little I know about my phone, I use it as a flashlight, GPS navigator, calculator, a barcode scanner, and many more.  Well, for my age I believe I am doing a pretty good job using my phone.

Smartphones have affected the way some families communicate these days. Children use smartphones to text their parents even if they are home or not.

My children do that, so when I know they are home and text or call me, I don’t respond back to them. I feel encouraging such practices would limit their ability to communicate well in person.  In my opinion, such practices would only hurt them in developing their communication and customer service skills.

Last year in church, we saw a video of the negative impact smartphones have on families who don’t use them wisely. In the video, family members who lived in the same house had not communicated verbally for hours.

Almost every communication was done via texting including announcing dinner was ready.  The mother said until smartphones came along, she had the best family. She believed the life of her family was slowly disintegrating due to the use of smartphones in the homes.

It was a funny, but sad video overall. Smartphones are great, but we should use them wisely to ensure that they don’t take away our senses of reasoning when it comes to communicating with family and friends.

My advice to those who are addicted. To the phones should not put something on fire whilst using the phone,I tried to and I failed (:

    • @B.B, that is what I am talking about. It is best that we as human beings have control over the use of our smartphones, and not the other way around. Smartphone are great if they are utilized well.
