Kwabena Kwabena & Daddy Lumba Have Composed Another Song For Akufo-Addo And NPP. How Relevant Are Musicians To Election Campaigns?

blank
We are in an era where political campaigns have heated up in Ghana. All the parties are putting up final touches to their campaigns to ensure victory for them in the coming December polls.
The question is; how influential are musicians in political campaigns in Ghana?
Do they really add something substantial to the political parties’ campaign or do they go there just to reap where they have not sowed?
With few weeks to December 7 when Ghanaians will go to the polls to vote to either maintain the current President John Mahama or replace him with his fiercest rival Nana Akufo-Addo or any of the other candidates from the other political parties, various entertainers have joined in their campaigns and busily canvassing for votes for them.
In Africa, due to abuse of incumbency, the party in government enjoys more electoral privileges than the opposition, so evidently the ruling party has gotten more endorsements from entertainments or celebrities than any of the political parties in the coming elections.
The above is no news because whatever is happening now is exactly what happened in the country in the last election which is still fresh in the minds of Ghanaian voters.
What happened in 2008 polls is repeating itself where the party in government benefited more in terms of coverage and how best they can ‘paint’ all walls in Ghana with their posters.
In Ghana, does a celebrity have the power to win a vote for a political party?  Celebrities or stars have honest followers but do their fans believe in the decisions they take?.
In one of my many arguments with a friend concerning this topic, he mentioned that, since celebrities have some loyal fans, some of them do vote for certain political parties they see them canvassing votes for. What a fat lie!
Maybe the above will work in the western world but not on the African continent and not Ghana. If celebrity endorsements really work, what happened to NPP in 2008?
Couldn’t they have won the elections hands down with all the musicians running after them? Have we forgotten about all their Believe In Ghana concerts which attracted virtually all the musicians?
If celebrity endorsements work, then it works somewhere else and not in Ghana.
From my perspective, celebrities or entertainers join or endorse political parties to enrich themselves. That’s a fact.
Also, I find it difficult to believe that, fans of Kwabena Kwabena and Daddy Lumba will vote for NPP and Akufo-Addo because their favourite musicians are campaigning for them.
Listen to the song below and don’t forget the question; how influential are celebrities in Ghana in relation to electoral campaign?

  1. i love both of them and am sure they have the right to support any political party they want…maybe the best way they think they can support their party is to compose a song for them not necessarily for all their fans to vote for the particular party. Although i love them, if they had sang for a party i dont support, am not sure i would have voted for that party because of their song…am glad they sang for the one i have decided to vote for …

  3. I believe most of these musicians in GH do it mainly for the money, its business. Am not sure if they have any political impact on their fans though.
