READERS’ MAIL:The Blind Copy of Foreign Trends-When Are We Going To Stop And Be Proud Of Our Culture And Heritage As Ghanaians

blankHello Chris,

I am an avid reader of this blog-GhanaCelebrities.Com and I just wanted to share something that I feel needs to be addressed. I don’t normally comments on articles that are posted on here. When I do comment, it is on issues that I feel strongly about and my username is She-Meyor.

One of such issues is the celebration of Halloween in Ghana. Since when did Ghana start celebrating Halloween? The copy-cat attitude about Ghanaians should Stop! Do they even know the reasons behind it and why Americans, and other foreign countries celebrate it? I’m so annoyed that our people  are Copying Blindly.

When did we start celebrating Goth and Ghoul and everything synonymous to Evil. I just cannot fathom why we are not proud of our culture and heritage, and that we just have to jump on every stupid idea that a foreigner has and think that will also be good for us.

Recently, I read an article on this blog about actress Juliet Ibrahim hosting a Halloween party titled ‘Halloween Weekend with the Stars’ to raise funds for her charity.

Although, I will commend her for the cause she has taken time to embark on, the theme for the party is a stupid one. And I repeat a STUPID one. Why couldn’t she find some other idea or theme for her party that is significant to the Ghanaian culture?

Also, Smirnoff is hosting another Halloween party to urge on this absurd trend that is going rampant in the country. This is a serious issue that needs attention in order to end it.

I live in the U.S. but I do not even celebrate Halloween or entertain the idea of it because it has a negative connotation to it. So I will urge my fellow Ghanaians to appreciate our culture and holidays and be proud of it.

If not, we will become a mockery of the world as a country that has no identity and just takes up on the practices of other nations..Hypothetically speaking, since we have started to celebrate Halloween, what else are we going to start celebrating? Are we going to start celebrating, Presidents’ Day, Memorial Day and July 4th (Independence Day) and Thanks Giving Day also?

Well, as a person from Ghana , I do not want to see our country go down such a destructive path all in the name of foreign trends.

It will be sad and disappointing to be seen as such. What do u think other African countries will say about us, as a Nation that condones such practices? Like I said earlier, we would be a Mockery of the world and that is not what we want as a Nation.

From Miss Eddie-Lynn/USA

  1. Ghanaians and their Ignorance.Juliet Ibrahim, so why would you want to introduce something that doesn’t belong to your culture to innocent people.First of all, Halloween has nothing to do with the Ghanaian culture and its absolutely pointless to the people. There are so many important themes you could have chosen for this so called charity..Next time, try and reason with wise professionals who can give you better advices.

  7. this is so sad, halloween in Ghana??? who gave her that idea anyway? i ve never allowed my kids to partake in any of their school’s halloween parties even though its the culture of the country we live in. So am just wondering why sm1 in Ghana will think of doing that evil thing by celebrating the devil???? Or maybe she doesn’t understand what ”HALLOWEEN” is all about. I pity her ignorance!!

  8. i HAVE ALWAYS SAID THAT GHANAIANS WILL ONLY COPY THE BAD CULTURES AND BEHAVIORS OF OTHER COUNTRIES, BUT NEVER THE GOOD. I HAVE LIVED IN THE USA FOR 26 YEARS, AND I DON’ TCELEBRATE HALOWEEN. I HAVE 3 CHILDREN ALL BORN IN THE USA AND I RAISED THEM EXCLUSIVE OF HALOWEEN. THEY CRIED AND MADE LIFE ALMOST UNBEARABLE, BUT IN THE END I WAS THE PARENT AND I WON. IT IS SUCH AN EVIL PRACTICE, AND FOR A COUNTRY AS GHANA WHERE CHRISTIANS ARE THE MAJORITY, I DON’T THINK THIS IS SUCH A GREAT IDEA AT ALL. I AM APPALLED THAT GHANAIANS WOULD EVEN CONSIDER CELEBRATING THIS OCASSION. THEY CAN GOOGLE HALOWEEN AND MAYBE READ THE HISTORY BEHIND IT. CHURCH LEADERS, PLEASE RISE UP NOW AND CONDEMN THE CELEBRATION OF THIS EVENT BEFORE IT GETS OUT OF HAND JUST AS VALENTINE’S DAY DID.

  9. She-meyor…well done with this article. I live in the US as well….we started teaching my nieces and nephews that were born in the US that we do not believe in halloween…they went to school last year and were asked where who they came as. My then 10 year old niece told her teacher that she came as herself and that her family do not believe in celebrating halloween. how can we be christians yet celebrate demons and witches? Please stars do not forgo of your heritage and culture. My question is how are they going to dress to a halloween party? Ghanaians are copying blindly what legacy and culture are we leaving for the next generation

  10. I wish could give you a big hug for this piece you wrote. Last year Nigerians did the same thing and now Ghanaians. Ghanaians should go back and ready the history of U.S; the country was built on religious grounds. Today, it is messed up because of celebrations like Halloween and have forgotten where God brought them from. I do not thing we Ghanaians want that to ever happen to us because if we look at all the African countries, we can say we are highly favored and blessed. We may not have much but we have the peace lots of countries are longing for. I know we all want this blessing to continue and even overflow. Please, if we have to copy from them we do not have to copy blindly but rather sieve it out. It is my prayer that God do not reject us and give us a reprobate mind.

  11. Today is HALLOWEEN in the USA. The Word of the Lord says: “My people perish for lack of knowledge…” (Hosea 4:6)……well, I am convicted to give you some information so here it is. What you do with it is your choice. I just do as I am convicted to share it with you. Be blessed!

HALLOWEEN is a religious day, but it is not Christian. Tom Sanguinet, a former high priest in Wicca has said: “The modern holiday that we call Halloween has its origins in the full moon closest to November 1, the witches’ new year. It is a
time when the spirits (demons) are supposed to be at their peak power and revisiting planet earth… Halloween is purely and absolutely evil, and there is nothing we ever have, or will do, that would make it acceptable to the Lord Jesus.”

JACK-O-LANTER: has its origin in the candle-lit pumpkin or skull, which served as a signal to mark those farms and homes that supported the druids’ religion, and thus were seeking the “treat” when the terror of Halloween began. The World Book Encyclopedia says: “The apparently harmless lighted pumpkin face of the Jack-O-Lantern is an ancient symbol of a damned soul.”

DAY OF DEATH: Halloween has strong roots in paganism and witchcraft. It began as the Druid festival of Samhain. The Celts considered November 1st the day of death, because, in the Northern hemisphere, this was the beginning of winter, the leaves were falling, it was getting darker earlier, and temperatures were dropping. They believed that their sun god was losing strength and Samhain, the lord of death, was overpowering the sun god. The druids also taught that on 31 October, on the eve of the feast, Samhain assembled the spirits of all who had died during the previous year to return to their former home to visit the living.

HUMAN AND ANIMAL SACRIFICES: On Halloween, for thousands of years, druid priests have conducted diabolical worship ceremonies in which cats, horses, sheep, oxen, human beings and other offerings were rounded up, stuffed into wicca cages and burned to death. These human and animal sacrifices were apparently required to appease Samhain and keep the spirits from harming them.

WE HAVE NO EXCUSE TO SUGAR COATED AND DRESS UP AS ANYTHING IF WE ARE FOLLOWERS OF THE LORD JESUS CHRIST!!!!

“Therefore, let us cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the Armour of Light.” Romans 13:12

“You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons; you cannot partake of the Lord’s Table and of the table of demons.” 1 Corinthians 10:21

BOTTOM LINE: “I don’t celebrate HALLOWEEN an undercurrent of occultism and is absolutely anti-Christian…for me and my house, we sill serve the LORD ~ JESUS CHRIST!

, we do appreciate that you feel strongly about this and it is your personal duty and right to express this “strong” feeling about the subject. Mind you; you go a step further when you call the idea “Stupid” .  You use words such as evil, goth and ghoul  clearly portraying your abhorrence for things evil then I think you should begin attacking most festivals in Ghana because they are mostly based on paganism and their rites (as you call it , everything synonymous with evil) Don’t you think that would be a thriftless venture??  If we are to talk of mockery because of “copying-catting” some foreign cultures then I dare say we begun to Mock ourselves on the day the white missionaries set foot on our soil and we “copied cat Christianity”.  I don’t wonder why we would like to play God (of course who won’t) but I do again wonder who has the right to play God and tell everyone which culture of foreign lands are good for us or bad. Is this not hypocritical at least? what is the yardstick? why do we play double standards ? I believe the basic tenets of living and life is to tolerate each other, do unto others as we wish others do unto us. No one has the right to play God.  These kind of sentiments bring rise to so many terrible atrocities, causing religious and ethnic violence just because someone feels something or some ritual is evil and feels “strongly” about it. Let us watch how we express our “strong” sentiments publicly. I believe we are all discerning and well meaning people.

    • @Benjamin, Thanks for your comment. Most of our festivals maybe/are based on paganism and u may be right. Not to justify what I wrote but it is part of us and has been that way for centuries and also halloween is part of the western culture which makes it theirs. Therefore, my point is that, we may all have some sort of paganistic festivities, but why then do we have to copy others and not celebrate our own. The copy-cat trend is an issue, and like I said in the article, even if we have to copy from another culture it shdnt be something such as halloween. Because it celebrates Goth, Ghoul and everything synonymous to evil. That is my concern hence, stating that the theme for the party was that of a stupid one. I just stated my concerns on this issue. And you dont have to agree with me. But I, as well as u are entitled to our opinions and beliefs.

  17. I agree totally with Miss Eddie-Lynn. I get extremely angry whenever I read about Ghanaians adopting ungodly foreign cultures into a world highly respected African country, Ghana. Like she rightly said, those people should first of all ask to know what the celebrations mean and why it is celebrated. If the government closes her eyes on these things, sooner or later people will start opening arms and ammunitions shops just like in America. Litte drops of water, they say, make a mighty ocean. Something has to be done now before things go offhand. Ghana will ever remain Ghana. She can never change to be any other. What is now happening in the country is no modernization of culture, but stealing foreign ones. One should open ones eyes widely to see where one is heading towards. Blindly copying leads one into total darkness and darkness leads or can lead to destructions. Ghana has gone far and must maintain her course, dignity and intergrity. Those money-minded people must be stopped now. It is never too late. One of the ex-presidents tried to instil morallity into the country during his time and it worked. Even imported films were controlled. Bad ones were not allowed to be screened. Whoever acted contrarilly lost his licence. Ghana arise against immorality before some few turn the nation into Babylon.
