Weekly Discussion: Online Fraud-What Tricks Have The Fraudsters Been Throwing Into Your Inbox?

Internet Fraud
Internet Fraud

Internet usage has increased greatly all around the globe, especially in Africa. The new internet boost and availability make it possible for some us to easily connect with loved ones, engage in various businesses and entertainment, catch up on what is happening in other countries, etc.
Very well hidden behind all these positive things we derive from the rapid expansion of internet is a group of advance and confident tricksters called Internet Fraudsters.
For the smart ones (like some of us), the ways of these Internet Fraudsters are stupid and can be easily detected.
They all seem to follow a particular pattern of either you are a winner of a big lottery (you never bought a ticket) or the Fraudsters have some gargantuan cash they will benevolently want to give to you.
I once asked myself if people really fall for such crap-annoying, stupid and weak tricks until for some reason, someone got hold of my paypal account in 2008 and used it to book a hotel in Florida. I was able to prove that I did not make the booking, I do not need any hotel out there and paypal immediately refunded my cash 🙂 …I have not still been able to figure out how they got it.
Experts believe global Internet fraud scams people out of hundreds of millions to billions of dollars each year. The figures keep increasing as internet usage expands.

  • Have you ever received any of the millions of those poorly written spam e-mails which often seem more annoying than threatening, but can cause substantial financial havoc on their victims?
  • What did the email say?
  • Have you fallen for any of these tricks before?
  • Do you know or have you heard of anyone who has fallen into the net of these fraudsters?

Let’s get talking…Share your experience and encounter with others, so we can easily spot these fraudsters thousand of miles away!

  2. I also had an email from a lady who claim to be from togo but gave me a nigerian name to transfer money to her(funny isnt it) she claim her father’s business partners kill him to take his money but her father fotunately willed the money to her, on condition that she has a business partner based abroad. So i shld send her a copy of my identity card and nd 4passport sized photograph and my account number. When i told her i had no acc number, she asked me to send her money to travel to ghana and sell her father’s house there so that she can send me the money to open the account and give her the number. I just laughed, how stupid does this nigerian think i am.

    Hello
How are you today? I am more than happy in your reply. How was your day? Mine, well i thank God for keeping me till this moment here in Dakar Senegal. My name is Rita , i am 22 years from Liberia in West Africa and presently, i am residing in the refugee camp here in Dakar Senegal as a result of the civil war that ravaged my country, please don’t be discouraged on hearing this as this is our first time of meeting. My late father Professor Dan eh Jama was a prominent man in the administration of the Government of my country and he held sensitive positions in the government before the rebels attacked and killed him along with my mother. I am the only one alive now and i managed to make my way to a nearby country Senegal where i am living now as a refugee. I would like to know more about you. Your likes and dislikes, your hobbies and what you are doing presently. I will tell you more about myself in my next email.  Attached here is my picture. Hoping to hear from you soonest.
    Yours
    Rita

    Dear,
How are you today?  I am very happy to read your mail and i believe that i am very lucky to come in contact with you. thanks for your picture honey,  There isn’t much left to talk about me,  i am single, never married and has no children.  Right now, i live as a refugee here in the refugee camp,  i am not working because i do not have permit to enter the city as a refugee.  Living here is just like someone in the prison.  I don’t have any family left because as you already know,  my parents died as a result of the crises in my country and all my relatives ran  away in the middle of the crises.  If you would like to speak with me on phone, i will be happy. I do not have a phone of my own  but you can call me through the phone of a pastor who has a church by the side of the camp.  The Pastor’s  Tel number is 00221765041451, if you call,  tell him that you want to speak with me, Rita, and he will send for me in the refugee camp.  Please whenever you want to call,  always call from 14 to 16 Hours GMT because within this time he is always free so he can allow me to speak with you within this time.
Dear,  it is my pleasure to ask for your assistance  regarding a very important issue in my life now.  To a reasonable degree,  my life and how fast i can come out of this refugee camp depends on it. I do not want to discuss this with anybody but after reading your few mails,  i was able to decide that you are the right person to talk to.

My father when he was alive made a deposit in a bank with my name as the next of kin.  The money is in the tune of 6.5 million dollars ($6,500,000).  It is my intention to transfer the money out of the bank so that i can personally have access to it,  but as a result of my political status as a refugee,  i have been unable to do that.

I have also contacted the bank where the money is deposited to discuss the issue,  and they have decided to transfer the money but i must present a trustee who will receive the money in his account for me as they can not make the transfer to me directly here  because  i am a refugee and have no personal bank account number.

I want to use this opportunity to ask for your assistance in this regard believing that you are the right person that my heart can trust.  I will be coming over to your country immediately the money is transferred to you so that i can be able to continue my education while you use the money for investments purposes.  I am willing to let you have 20% of the total sum after the transfer while you use my own share for investments on my behalf.
I would like to introduce you to the bank as my partner for the transfer but before i do that,  i have to get your confirmation,  so i would like you to give me more information about yourself as it will help me in talking to the bank about you.
    I would need information’s like…
    1.  Your full names.
    2.  Your phone numbers.
    3.  Your occupations.
    4.  Your age

Immediately after introducing you to the bank,  i shall give you all the necessary information’s about the bank and the account so that you can contact them for confirmations.  I am believing that  this will be the begging of a lasting relationship between us.  Have a lovely day as i await your mail with the information’s soon,  kiss with love.
    Yours,
    Rita
