Kumasi-Based Actor George Berthou Faults The Organisers Of The ‘Kumawood Film Festival & Akoben Movie Awards!

Published by

Few weeks ago, Kumawood Entertainment and Concept Developers with support from major stakeholders of the film industry launched a new film festival ‘Kumawood Film Festival’ and award scheme ‘Akoben Movie Awards‘.

The event aims at rewarding Actors, Actresses, Writers, Directors, Producers, Technician and other personalities in the local film making industry in Ghana.

It is also to provide opportunities for film makers to have spotlight on their films and also aims at promoting, supporting indigenous Ghanaian film making.

Many players from that part of the industry have lauded the concept. On his part, half Ghanaian and half French actor cum director who is based in Kumasi, George Berthou has faulted the organisers for hurriedly launching the awards.

He told GhanaCelebrities.Com that, he felt the organisers rushed to outdoor the awards: “Definitely, I think the program and some of the things were not well put. Some of the things were not well arranged. The organisation weren’t well up to scratch.”

During the launch, there were issues with which language should be spoken. The launch commenced with English, until part of the audience asked for the language to be switched to Twi.

Commenting on that, George said: “The organisation wasn’t well arranged; it appears everyone was doing what they like. The whole thing was actually nice. One thing I didn’t like was that, they are actually trying to honour the society that we live in, so they could have spoken Twi throughout the process.” He said it’s one of the reasons why he thinks the whole process was rushed.

He also blamed the organisers for the boycott of the known actors/actresses.

The awards were launched without any of the top actors/actresses present. Its came out that, the actors were not happy with the organisers hence the boycott.

But Kwaku Twumasi, an Actor, Director and Producer who also doubles as the head of the awards committee denied it vehemently. He told GhanaCelebrities.Com that, indeed they extended invitations to some of them but the attention was centred greatly on the media.

Adding his voice to why the top actors/actresses in Kumasi boycotted the launch, George said the excuse that they were busy on set was neither here nor there.

“It was very bad that top actors/actresses didn’t show up at the launch. The organisations should have been done properly. How can you launch awards for some people and the people themselves were not around?” he asked, continuing that “The organisers didn’t do their homework well.”

He therefore advised that, though the new awards have been launched,Kumasi movie makers should not think of boycotting the Ghana Movie Awards. He believes that is big enough.

Even though George concurs, the concept “ isn’t bad”, he admonished the organisers “I think next time; they should take their time to put things in order before coming out.”

This light-skinned actor shot to fame with the movie ‘Love & Bullet’. He has many movies yet to be released. His mother hails from Ashanti Region of Ghana whiles hails from France.
