As I mentioned yesterday, it is sad to be discriminated against on a foreign land but it is utterly disheartening when you are treated less favourable in your own country by virtue of the colour of your skin or any protected characteristic such as Religious Belief, Sex, Age, Disability or Origin.
In her own homeland-Ghana, Miss Elizabeth Okoro was less favourable treated and denied access to a ‘club restaurant’ by virtue of the fact that she is black (Ghanaian).This is a clear and direct breach of the fundamental laws of discrimination.
With the help of various platforms and people, we all decided to take this issue up yesterday and I am reliably informed that, the Government of Ghana has today closed down the offending Seafood Restaurant- Atlantic Lobster and Dolphins Ltd in Osu for allegedly operating a policy of discrimination.
I am excited about the immediate action taken by the government and the fact that lots of people including you came out to support Miss Elizabeth Okoro.
However, a mere close down does not do anything for Elizabeth Okoro. Her right to fair treatment and not to be discriminated against both under Common Law and Statute has been notoriously violated. She deserves to be compensated for this fundamental breach.
Shutting the restaurant down is a step forward, but that is not justice for the person who suffered the discrimination. Miss Elizabeth Okoro MUST sue the restaurant for the compensation she is entitled to have.
Deputy Tourism Minister James Agyenim Boateng has said that said the closure is not premised on the allegations of racial discrimination but failure by the company to adhere to legislative instrument.
According to the deputy Minister, the Italian owner confirmed making the racial comments but described it only as a joke… AS A JOKE?
Nonsense, you do not come to Ghana and treat her citizens like animals with no rights. Even animals have rights!
