Being a celebrity in any part of the world comes with pockets of advantages and loads of disadvantages. In the West where the concept and practice of ‘Celebrityship’ is well understood, celebrities receive several freebies, huge attention and support for their works.
It is not always a beautiful day in the life of celebrity. Things get messy and harsh with several critics, fans and haters monitoring their every day doings solely to find faults and bash them for these flaws. This is the real life of a true celebrity and the true celebrities have accepted to live with this, finding reasonable ways around the various eagle eyes pointed at them all the time.
With our entertainment industries growing and mounting credibility, certain industry actors have been honoured with ‘celebrity status’. Whether they deserve this status or not is another piece to be considered next time.
The ‘celebrity status’ confirmed on these industry players have been fully accepted and this is evident in the fact that they glorify themselves with it and have even been enjoying the various benefits ‘freebies’ that come with ‘status’.
What is still worrying is that, unlike the West where celebrities face the pros and cons of the status they carry on their shoulders, our celebrities’ desire and only recognise the pros of the game.
Probably some intensive coaching needs to be done to enlighten our celebrities on the fact that the status they crave and sometimes vehemently seek has two sides-the negative and the positive.
As much as they want to walk on the red carpets, pose for the cameras, jump queues at public places and be given esteemed treatments, they should also be ready to swallow without water the various ruthless criticisms and attacks on their careers and sometimes even on their personalities as well as private lives.
The way and manner in which our celebrities carry themselves when hit with criticisms begs the question…Are Ghanaian ‘Stars’ Ready To Become Celebrities?
hmmm…i dont think so…they so dont want it…
They are not. This also make me wonder and laugh at their Hollywood ambitions. They are not prepared to take up on nasty criticisms and yet they want to celebrities or go to hollywood? that is funny. I think they have to know that everything that has advantage has also got disadvantage
Personally I have a prob with these LOCAL CHAMPIONS celebrities even. These people can never ever be real celebrities unless they do a full over haul on themselves.maybe when we are dead and gone
@akosuaghana,
YOU PEOPLE R IGNORANT!!!!!
NOBODY MAKES HIMSELF ONE, IT IS PEOPLE THAT CELEBRATE OTHERS. IF I DECIDE TO CELEBRATE AJA KOO, WHY SHOULD HE CHANGE HIS LIFE TO SUIT ME?
SOME PEOPLE’S JOBS MAKE THEM FAMUOS AND THAT ATTRACTS THE ATTENTION OF JOBLESS PEOPLE LIKE THE WRITER OF THIS PIECE AND YOU.!
Wait since when does blogging not pay the bills? Hehe my friend you betta ask somebody@kwame,
Well there is constructive criticism and then there is also criticism that is destructive. I believe as a critic, you should not hit only the bad side but when it comes to touting something good, you should be able to do that too. The kind of criticism i see of certain celebrities on this blog is more of a destructive one. Celebrities in the west get criticized all the time but they also sometimes react too and not always in a postive way……Granted that celebrities in Ghana may not handle criticism very well, criticism should be more constructive rather than destructive. The trend on this website has been to be criticize some of the celebrities and always praise other celebrities, and the kind of criticism you provide here to these celebrities is more of destructive than constructive,in my opinion of course. I mean tell em as it is but we all know there is no one who is perfect but sometimes the writers of this blog are very nit picky… i mean the most of ridiculous of situations to criticize. Take the Yvonne Nelson Saga for instance, this blog chose to attach the words confused / banned actress for almost a year to the lady’s name?? I mean was that really necessary to do that to get the point across? Be mature in your criticisms instead of dwelling on unimportant stuff. Sometimes hitting the same point over and over again about the same celebrity makes you sound like a broken record! It is important that we treat all the celebrities equally instead of doing what George Orwell describes in Animal farm “All animals are equal but some are more equal than others. Mr Vincent,in as much as you think that these celebrities do not handle criticism very well, i believe you as a celebrity blogger do not handle criticism very well either especially if they destructive and that is just human nature,i do not fault you for that . Life is a learning experience, where we all learn from our mistakes and we should give credit when it is due and also criticize constructively when it is necessary.
@Unknown, God bless you for writing this is i don’t believe it could’ve been said better. You hit every single important point and i agree with everything you said. Ghanacelebrities criticizes the Ghollywood celebrities so horrendously at times and it’s really a turn off. Again it is a shame that we treat our own like nothing and put the almighty Hollywood celebrities on pedal stools. This is the problem with we African’s as we always put ourselves down doubting our abilities of getting to the top. Don’t get me wrong i think i do believe that criticism is necessary in life or there will be no improvement but there are ways to do it that isn’t downright awful.
And since this website almost always negatively criticizes the “LOCAL CHAMPIONS” as you call it, then perhaps the name of the website should change. After all they are not “celebrities” in your eyes.
Hm….all of this showa Gollywood lacks statisticians who can correlate the importance of critisisms in the cacareer of a celebrity. FRED NUAMAH N SOCRATE SAFO please take note, we need credible peswas n cedis which shows for every bad press a person like Nadia Buari gets her movie sales decline or figures that show for every time a local language movie gets no press the underbelly of Ghana finds a way to buy the latest AgyaKoo film.
Perhaps the only stat who seems ready for the harshness of Hollywood is a veterans like Adjetey Anang, Rama Brew, or David Dontoh or a director like Socrate Sarfo(porno in USA is big money and that tribe is missing its African chief)
