Readers’ Mail: The Reasons Why Ghanaian Entertainers Do Not Win Any International Awards Even If Nominated…Makes Me Sad As A Ghanaian!

Nadia Buari
Nadia Buari

Dear Chris-Vincent,

Is anyone getting tired and depressed about the fact that even though Ghanaian entertainers/celebrities have been receiving nominations for awards’ outside Ghana, they go and come back empty handed?

This is making me sad and yesterday’s D-black’s lost to Nigeria’s 2face and D’banj at the BET Awards nearly got me ill.

After last night’s awards, I asked a couple of friends who I watched the Awards show with a very simple question; Why don’t our Ghanaians win awards outside Ghana?

All the answers I got pointed towards one direction and as much as they seemed harsh, I fully agreed with them. Our Celebrities/Entertainers are the cause of their own inability to get the necessary support and votes to win awards.

In simple terms, all my friends said ‘Ghanaian celebrities or entertainers are stucked up and until they begin to respect their fans and the media, they will never win any award or show that demands some public vote’.

One of my friends said, “Cynthia, imagine how many people will vote for Nadia Buari if she is nominated for an International Award? Come to think about it, which media house will even help her get people to vote? If she is lucky, she may get 5 votes from her family”.

Our Ghanaian celebrities/entertainers have very poor touch and relationship with their fans and media, until these core structures which serve as a wheel to taking them up places and vote them into winning awards are addressed, they will happily go to award shows but come back with sad faces and empty hands.

This is 2 cents, you can add yours!

  1. EVERYONE WHO has a computer wants to write a blog. mtcheeeeeeew. the only reason Ghanaians will never win any international award is because Ghaians hate each other. they hate to see someone climbing high. the only people Ghanaians like are the people who are mediocre. like Naida is better than jackie, but its Jackie who can get votes even though she cannot act. because she grants air head interviews and says nothing smart so we all love her for being small minded.  Ghanaians only support people who are not a threat to them.  if you are intelligent and smart and make sense all the time, Ghanaians call you too known and arrogant. only the mediocre go far in Ghana because they are not a threat to anyone.

  3. But 2face hasn’t brought out any major hits in the last few months or the last year. How do they even choose who wins. ridiculous.

    • @ghallday, are u in this world or u just want to talk because it involves a nigerian, where were u when he released hisTHE UNSTOPPABLE IINTERNATIONAL EDITION last year which had hits like implication, rain drops etc

      Reply
      • @flint, yea I remember that one. My bad. That didn’t make so much waves as his other albums did. I like 2face but this time around someone else deserved it a little bit more than him. btw I am not  into this gh-naija tug of war that goes on around here.

        Reply
        • @ghallday, yes it didn’t make waves as his other album, actually it is his second most successful album since his first because his last 2 albums all floped, but since when has how much wave an album makes been the sole criteria of awarding musicians, what about the content quality,my dear if u are not into such gh-naija tug of war then u shouldn’t have rushed into conclusion in this issue because it makes u look like one.

          Reply
          • @flint, Rushed in conclusions. No I wouldn’t say that. As you already have admitted that his last 2 albums flopped. “African Queen” was featured in a big screen movie and that I would say has boosted his popularity in the “BET circles” and that also counts. You can’t disregard that completely. “see me so” is one of the best hits I listen all all the time. This time around someone else deserved it.

          • @ghallday, my dear it very much looks like u rushed into this ones because u are not giving objective points here rather u are giving sentimental points,if we were to go by ur insinuation then every musician whose music have been used as a soundtrack to a hollywood movies should end up winning an award in whatever award ceremony they are nominated in,the last time i checked that is not how it is done at prestigious music awards, and also the last time i checked awards weren’t based on sentiments,it wasn’t like oh u have won before let someone else win it this time,2face and dbanj deserves it because the worked hard for it,even the popularity u are talking about,do u think the just sat back and the popularity came to them,no the worked hard for it,so maybe they should stop giving beyonce awards simply because she is more popular than most artists she will be nominated with or that she has won the awards so many times therefore it is time for someone else to win it, please my dear be serious and admit that 2face and dbanj were the better nominees on that given night.

  4. come on now ghanaians, the fact that these guys won doenst mean they have international recognition. how many people in the african american community here in the Unites States know about Tuface or Dbanj? prolly none. i can bet on my life that majority of people who voted for these guys to win were not african americans. i am african american so i know what i am saying. they were not even recognized on stage, did u noticed that? this prove my point. no one give a damn about them. i guess majority who voted were nigerians. it’s easy chris. just go to BET website and cast a vote on whichever category u are interested it. they have the population, u guys dont. winnings was based on public vote. i guess nigerians voted for their stars. dont see why u shld be sad. my ghanaian friend(Stacy) already knew that the ghanaian artist did not have a chance not because he is not talented but because he doesnt have the population to push him up. i will say it again, african americans did not vote for these guys, they dont know them. nigerians living in the US and other places did. remember they are more than u. they will always have the vote.

    • @TAMEKA, while i would admit that i don’t know how BET pick there winners, i would like to ask u this,if ur assertion is anything to go by(that is basing winners on the population of their respective countries) then how come neither psquare nor mi that were nominated at last year BET awards won since nigeria is almost three times the population of UK,but the award went to dizzee rascal, please for once u guys should stop calling black white and give credit to whom it is due,2face and dbanj won not because of the nigerian population but because of their talent, not that the rest of the nomines didn’t have talent but on this given night their talent proved worth more than the other nominees.

      Reply
    • @TAMEKA, one more thing so if african americans get to know them then the world will come to a still, give me a break.

    • @TAMEKA, your so wrong don’t no where you get your info from or the kind of 1952 television your watching but D’banje and 2 face have both made their name known in the states buy doing allot collaboration with top artist plus one thing with nigerians is they like an army of soldiers they all each others back their is no hate among them

      Reply
      • @Miyagi, doing colaboration with som african american artist doesn’t not mean these guys are recognized in the african american community or america for that matter. they are not popular within the african american community.go to the african american community or america in general and ask them about tuface or Dbanj. u r gonna get answers like Dbanj who? or Tuface who? that what i am trynna say.they dont know them.I hve never even seen any of their videos being played on BET. Dbanj collabo with snoop was never shown on BET. i dont think i will go to walmart or other big stores and find tuface or dbanj CD displayed for sale. honestly i dont see why these record labels here in the US will sign them and not take them all the way there. kinda like signing them, yet they still remain local stars who CD only rotate among the African community alone. that’s the point i was trynna make. the other point i was trynna make was i dont see why the writer of this article should be sad because ghanaians dont get international awards. the winings for the BET awards was not based on judges decisions but rather on public vote. it’s as simple as that. anybody can vote for their favorite artists. u just gotta visit BET website and cast a vote. that’s it. majority that have time to vote are these high school african american or latino kids.they have the time for stuff like this and a few white high kids maybe, but of course u know whites are usually not into hip hop culture like that. Kinda like 106 & Park, where all u see is high schoo kids gracing that show. grown up folks usally dont have time for stuff like that. so the point i was trynna put accross was that these high school kids dont know much about africa or dont not even wanna know much about africa, to talk about knowing about artist from africa. so majority of them prolly did not vote on the best international act category because they dont know them so they wont care for them. if wining was based on judging alone, then trust me only one person woulda won. there wouldn’t be a tie. i just believe majority of nigerian in US or places voted to push their artists at the top. i am not saying they are not talented or they don’t deserve that award. rather i beleive they have a big population backing them which ghana dont have. And no Miyagi, I dont watch 1952 TV. lol. i am only 24 so i’m current. just that i am tynna prove a point that the fact that the ghana dude did not win does not mean he is not talented or that something is wrong with ghanaian artist. no. sometime having a big population behind ur back helps. remember all it took was for one to get on a computer, visit the website and vote or text to cast a vote. thats all it took. even the guy that won the other category who was from the UK was nigerian. come on guys. think. does this means african has no talent besides nigerians? nigerians voted in large numbers to push their guys up. thats a simple truth.

        • @TAMEKA, thanks for your feedback but ibdont no if the uk BET is the same as the USA but they do show video’s of d’banje on bet including the collaboration with snoop and even the making of D’ banje and kanye west 2 face became popular with “African queen” allot of African American  new him from that time already people like big boy, D’banje, ruggedman, wandi coal have made a new in the state already don’t know what part of the USA your staying but I’m sure you know the naija boyz they did allot as well and also by advertising those artist by putting them on the map

          • @TAMEKA, I see but I wouldn’t trade UK in for USA loooool too many confused people down there I love UK

People like u are those who bring GH down, instead of u to show your love and support our celebrities u are rather saying they dont know how to act. If u keep on saying things like this how are they going to get the encouragement to keep on working hard in oder to make GH known? If Nigerians where that mean and ungrateful to their stars will they have gotten this far? They showed love and supported their stars thats why they are where they are right now, so stop insulting them and show them love.

  8. the reason why ghanians cant win is because our music is not as popular as the nigerian music. and nigerian music is much better and nicer den gh music be honest. any if a nigerian is nominated they will always win

    • @aida, thats exactly my point , I am half ghanaian and nigerian but I hate to see it when both ghanaians and nigerians argue about who the best is, I think we are all one and we ought to behave like brothers and sisters instead of yawaing ourselves.

    • @Akata, oh! how time runs,i remember there was a time ghana was claiming that they were better than nigerian in music and that the taught nigerian music, the nigerian music scene exploded around 2004 when 2face came out with his first album, and no nigeria has not always been out there, they worked hard to get to that place, tell ur ghanaian musicians to work hard in other to get there and stop giving all kinds of excuses for the nigerian music success and the ghanaian music failure, its all about hardwork.

      • @flint, im 100% Ghanaian and i agree with you. Ghanaians dont really work hard toward their music.. Nigerians loves competition and being successful and they will do anything possible to get there. Ghanaians are not like that. They care less about competition but sometimes when you compete with others, you always want the best to come out of you and you try to do that. Ghanaians dont do that. thats why.

There is one entertainer in ghana who I think should
Really be awarded, he got real talent, ghanaians ur really need to
Support him, I read comments and people always hating on him,
Saying he’s everywhere, he’s overrated,,if ur ghanaians really support
Him, he gonna be the male Genevieve or even bigger them her,
Over the yrs I have watched talented african actors, like RMD , Ramsey Noah,
Jim ike, etc but majid michel is really Talented, if ur like it or not, that’s the turth,
Majid is the proud to ghana,
My friends and I have been emailing the AMAA’s, he need best actor award,
He’s the best to ever come out of Africa, (FYI I’m not from Ghana or Nigeria).

  15. First off…Ghana didn’t win because Ghanaian music is mostly very “in-house” music, and can only be understood by Ghanaians or people leaving in Ghana. D-BLACK is an average emcee, and hasn’t come with anything original (Even the “YES BOSS” he says is a common slang in Lagos he stole from Naeto C).
Give Nigeria the respect its due. Compared to the Other artists Tuface and D’BANJ have made strong moves in the last one year. Tuface’s Unstoppable album has sold over 200,000 units (at 1000 naira a copy,do the maths, thats GH10 a copy) and  D’banj collaborated with Snoop and has just signed a $3,000,000 deal with Kanye West’s G.O.O.D music imprint. This isn’t a Nigeria, Ghana thing but truth be told is that Ghana music apart from Hi-life in the fifties and sixties (big ups ET Mensah and Jerry Hanson and the Ramblers!) does not transcend the rest of Africa, and even the ones that have a bit of “buzz” these days copy Nigerian Pidgin or slangs.
Ironically 3 of the Nominees from the UK and the winner of the international act award for the UK are “Nigerian British”. Tinie Tempah (winner), Skepta( Joseph Adenuga), and Laura Ikazuboh are all of Nigerian descent. Even the person who won last year, Dizzee Rascal…has a NIGERIAN FATHER.
You Have to admit or acknowledge that Nigeria musically is going places….can you see the trend?

    Reply
    • @9JA BOY, you do have a point…..i admire how the nigerians are pushing and most importantly SUPPORTING each other. That is a concept we a re yet to learn. We like to stifle those who try to come out with something original because we are afraid of change and narrow minded.Ofcourse not everyone, but a significant some.Too bad they are achieving their desired effect.

You meet some of them and they think they are Jesus, they will not even smile or when you say Hello, they don’t look at you even. However, when they need your vote or something, they come out for you.

  18. common guys ! the answer to this is quite simple, dbanj and co would get more votes simply because they are from nigeria and they are well represented in terms of numbers..even if the entire ghanaian population did vote for dblack, it would only take the population of two states in naija , say lagos and kano to overturn that vote..this is  something we just need to accept as ghanaians . its got nothing to do with our celebrities not reaching out to the fans..NAIJA IS JUST SO MUCH BIGGER..

EVERYONE WHO has a wants to write a . mtcheeeeeeew. the only reason Ghanaians will never win any international award is because Ghaians hate each other. they hate to see someone climbing high. the only people Ghanaians like are the people who are mediocre. like Naida is better than jackie, but its Jackie who can get votes even though she cannot act. because she air head interviews and says nothing smart so we all her for being small minded.
