Birthdays are celebrated with friends, family and loved ones. Some also celebrate this special day all by themselves but actress Khareema Aguiar celebrated her 25th birthday with various senior citizens being taken care by HelpAge Ghana.
HelpAge Ghana is a non-governmental, non-religious and non-profit making organization established in 1988 to promote the prospects of older persons in the Ghanaian society.
In most African settings, when one is old, they are relegated to the background. Some are tagged as witches or wizards and are blamed for every misfortune in their household. When a young woman out there cannot have a baby, the innocent looking old woman is her problem. And the accusations continue unabated.
The actress revealed to GhanaCelebrities.com that she grew up with her aunty as a result of the early death of her parents. However, her ageing aunty who is now over 80 years old could not make it to her special party.
The party wasn’t only about eating and drinking, it was more of a conversation as the oldies chip in a question or two intermittently. Khareema seems to have put a smile on their faces, as one of the old men said, for him “he has not celebrated a birthday party before”. This drew amusement.
When the old folks gathered around her to sing her happy birthday, present a birthday card and a rose flower to her, she couldn’t help but to show emotions by shedding tears. She told the gathering that in fact the birthday card and the rose flower are the only card and flower that she has received this year.
The look on her face as she utter those words confirmed that she valued the honour the oldies accorded her. Not many people will have oldies gather around and sing for them.
Khareema’s birthday cake had the inscription ‘KHAREEMA’S LOVE FOR THE AGED’. Also, a customize wall clock had Khareema’s picture and ‘I SUPPORT THE AGED’ written on it for auction.
In her speech, she advocated for the oldies to be supported and well looked after. She told GhanaCelebrities.com she hopes to celebrate every occasion with them.
