Sarkodie Insults Vodafone Ghana Saying: I Took ‘Coins’ From Them Because They Cant Pay Me My Actual Worth.

Sarkodie
Sarkodie

He was humble until  the 10th of April 2010 when he was announced as the ‘Artiste of the Year’ at the Ghana Music Awards. Prior to that, he has been parading himself on the streets as Ghana’s fastest rapper.

I am sure you have gotten the clue. If not, let me give you more clues. On that night, he won the ‘Discovery of the Year’ award, making him the first artiste with first album to win the ultimate ‘Artiste of the Year’. Aside those awards, he won the following awards, ‘Hip hop/hiplife Artist of the Year’, ‘Best Rapper of the year’ and ‘Album of the Year’.

Yes his name is Sarkodie. This write-up will explain why musicians in Ghana will continue to die as paupers. They don’t LEARN. Some human beings forget so soon where they come from, especially after managing to attain a little success in their art.

As part of the program to celebrate Vodafone’s first anniversary in Ghana, a show dubbed ‘020 LIVE CONCERT’ has been put together. There was a press conference to introduce the artistes billed to perform on the night and interact with the media.

The microphone went around and the artistes lined up endorsed the event and the Vodafone foundation which will be launched later on. The artistes includes Ruff n Smooth, Richie, Eazzy, P Square, Sarkodie, Ikechukwu and 4X4

Sarkodie said nothing better than to laud and shower praises on himself saying “I am listened to even more than the president”. WHO CARES? A quick question was thrown to him as to why he didn’t say anything concerning the event but talking about the fact that he is listened to than the president.

The reply to that question confirms that Sarkodie didn’t read the Vodafone contract before signing it or probably another person signed it for him. He said “Well I don’t know what’s going on here, I wasn’t briefed”.

Last week at an event to give out the various cash prizes to the recent Ghana Music Award Winning musicians, Sarkodie disgraced himself with some usless attitude. People thought he will calm down on his pomposity but Sarkodie was once again full of himself with his “guy guy attitude” today at the Vodafone Press Conference. He descended to the gutters by taking about miscommunication between himself and the organizers.

Sarkodie talked about the fact that he’s done enough and a lot of ‘free shows’ when nobody has asked him if the show is for free or not. I think he has forgot that, as a new artiste on your way to the top, you will have to do free shows. This ‘MISCOMMUNICATION’ vibe made the Head of Strategy and Brands of Vodafone Ghana, Uche Ofodille squeeze her face in shock.

He digressed and started blabbing that, he only took ‘coins’ from Vodafone before accepting to perform on the show because they can’t pay him the actual amount he is worth. He said “I only took coins from Vodafone”.

The conference room went mute amidst Sarkodie’s shocking revelations then there came a voice from Vodafone “But we still paying you”. This drew laughter from the people present.

Honestly, what I gathered from Sarkodie’s utterances is that, it didn’t go well with the organizers and even before the Press Conference started, they regret to have signed on Vodafone and wish to redraw him.

GhanaCelebrities.com wants answers to these questions:

  • If Sarkodie was not briefed on what was happening, who dragged him to the press conference?
  • Who signed his Vodafone contract? Is it his manager?

  1. Ma grandmother always told me if U want to know a man’s true colors; give him a lil dough & recognition and He shall display / disclose his disguised colors he’s been hiding. Right now fame has eluded his ” Modulo Oblongata ” & doesn’t have the slightest idea of how to handle it, there by spilling out any trash that pops up in his head. It’s not his fault, I’m not surprised he also didn’t read what the contract underscore’s b4 agreeing to b a part of the conference or evening signing it. I certainly agree with the publisher of the article that most Ghanaian will remain paupers till they die. I don’t think there was a miscommunication b/n him, his manager & Vodafone he just wanted to flaunt himself & get more attention. For once i thought Sarkodie has his head stuck on his shoulder but his recent outburst proves the stereotype saying about how to keep facts from the reach of a black man.. Apparently he never read the contract and become a statistics to that stereotype.. If U want to hide the facts & truth from the black man put it in book or piece of paper..

  2. And finally if he says he was paid ” coins ” then that’s show much he’s worth. For a man is who he say he is. They paid U coins and U accepted it without bargaining or hesitation. Jeeeeeeez I’m even surprised he had the nerve to voice out amidst the conference that Vodafone couldn’t pay him what he’s worth, that really made him sound lamer than appears to be. Sarkodie get your priorities straight & don’t allow ya uncheck ego to bring U to your knee…
    Cheers

Sarko dont think you are a demi god now simply because you were given about 5 Ghana music swards. Listen again to the collabo track called Hiplife which you did with Obrafour. Dont take it as just a mere song, he was advising you for real as if he knew you would turn out this way.

  8. As a celebrity you should know people are out to get you, everyone is watching you, so therefore, you should always be mindful of what you say especially in public.

What you uttered was a big insult to Vodaphone i must say. If you were joking, how would people know at that time.Nobody is a magician to know what you thinking and you also didnt that you were joking at that moment.
You cant say you are humble when your behavior says something else.

If they paid you coins and you thought you are worth more than that, you simply reject the offer, you dont accept it and make unnecessary utterance and later say you were only joking. The harm would have already been done.

And please read all contracts before you sign and if you cant then hire a legal team to represent and explain such contracts for you because i dont think Vodaphone gave you all those “coins” for you to praise yourself. If not then you would always look very stupid if you say “i wasn’t briefed” It does not show professionalism especially for an artiste who claims to be worth so much.

I am writing this just one time for your mind 🙂

The event being promoted is for a good cause, and while all the other artists were talking about how they are happy to be supporting such a great cause and giving back to the people …. when Sarkodie got the mic all he did was blab on and on about himself and how much of a great star he is. He did not even say a word about the cause being promoted. … Pesonally, I think it was very tacky and distastefull !!

Yeah, I’ve said it!  Just a bunch of  self-righteous hypocrites that will right and attack anyone who’s view/outcome doesn’t fit their holier than thou thinking. The same people who fueled up the industry with tribal non-sense and mate me ho, mate me ho sem are the very same people pushing all this new fake publicity stunt bull$shit.

Like Moi just commented, Sarko, you’re at the top and a lot wanna see you down so mind your words.  You don’t take the cheap pennies then turn around to comment about the same people that’s paying you. That’s what Method Man will call “Phucking with the hand the rocks the cradle” you know what I mean?
I know ‘You did it for the cred’ just to look cool to your fan’s but that’s played out. Kindly stay humble and keep going higher with your already superb talents. Just keep in mind someone, somewhere, is always angry at your shine so protect yourself bro. You do that by staying mute (keeping your mouth closed b4 you say the wrong thing to the wrong person), and minding your own business. And never, never say negative things about those who are paying you. “Don’t shit where you eat”. You’re a beginning artist and just like how your career is slowly taking off, there’s people with the power to put a stop to your career in an instant! Just stay wise and stay bless. Get yo hustle on ma dude. Go!

  19. @ Homeland : Nobody is hating on Sarkodie, I think he’s a remarkable Artiste with gr8 artistry & a lot to offer his fans & Ghana as a whole. It’s rather unfortunately sum ppl never wants to accept their short comings & consider constructive criticism as ”hating / despising ” which is far from the norm. If U read b/n what I wrote carefully I never in anyway attacked his personality or Rap credentials but rather the issue at stake, I live in the diaspora ( US ) & I know 1st hand how ”awkward utterances & behavior’s ” made by Celebrities have negative effects on their career. Sakordie have it known that the world is watching not only Ghanaians & your music is being listened to by diverse kinds of people .. Africans, Latino’s & some Caucasians listen to Ur music kind curtsey Ghanaian student abroad & these ppl follow the media trends in Ghana as well so beware. Always remember those that criticize U constructively are those who wants the best 4 U not those who support blindly & later neglect U,SAKORDIE wht do i stand to gain by hatin on U ?… Absolutely NUFFIN, I want U to act right & keep releasing hits tracks.

Hammer, as an adult, you dont have to go near justifying the stupid comment of Sarkodie at all but to slap him hard in the face. Sarkodie is just growing wings. This guy move around wearing some hooded top, tight jeans which squeezes his balls and some useless “Cambo”(sneekers) and he thinks people listen to him more than the president? Only a fool will ever say this or make such a comparism.

I dont think he was even able to pass his common entrance examination or SSSCE. He gets an award from charter house and he thinks he is JayZ or 50 cent right? He should not forget that chater house is not Ghana. Ghanaians are not stupid, if he continues this way, his downfall will catch up on him little than sooner. Jokes? who cares about his jokes at such an important press conference? is it a joke conference or press conference? or is it keysoap concert party? If you people are his friends and you he jokes alot, what abt the other 23 millions ghanaians who are not his friends?

Be wise if you want to sustain your career and apologise for this rubbish you said.

  31. Well,if the rapper Sarkodie did make those comments “that vodafone is paying him coins”, and “that he is more listened to than the president of the nation”,then i believe he erred. Yes to him,it may have been a mere joke, but i am sure Kanye West also thought ;he was pulling a fast joke on Taylor Swift at the music awards when he interrupted her acceptance speech and ” Beyonce had one of the best albums”, for that comment,he was dissed a lot. My point is the “pride comes before the fall”. I know Sarkodie’s alleged error may not have been as grave as Kanye’s,but i don’t think the press conference was the appropriate medium to air his grievances about his pay, he should have done so in private.
To him ,Sarkodie,it may have been a joke but some jokes are expensive especially for a celebrity whose words can easily be misconstrued.
I finally end by saying,To err is Human and to forgive is divine,we all err in our everyday lives so let’s forgive the rapper for his error, joke or no joke.

I mean do u think if some1 lyk akon made this comment any gh so called journalist wud utter a word abt it. this same so called journalist wud ve totally agreed just becos its comin frm some1 he cannot afford to see or look in the eye cos this person aint frm gh.
well i think such pple who write these shitty articles r just hypocrates & add to it that ghanaian artists be it actor, musician or whatsoever dnt move forward. Do you think a fellow man can be successful if his ppl at home do not support him… it´’s really all just a pity…i mean come to think of what sarkodie said (even if it was supposed to be a joke) had truth in it. for instance how can u invite nigerian artists here n pay them almost $100, 000 grand to perfom but pay the ghanaian artists frm Gh only lets say a maximum of 3000 gh cedis (note here not even dollars!). This is all a result of how we ghanaians go abt with each other n the way we do business. its not even politics just music which is supposed to bring as all together, but look at how dirty we talk with each other.
well i hope such journalist do not come far, which they probably will not & i hope sarkodie keeps doing what he does best cos he makes us ghanaians abroad very proud with his music & how far he has come…

  34. @ghallday. You see, like ‘hammer of the last 2’ commented above, I just see the HATING that this site has been created to spread.

If you care to know, I AM in the Entertainment sector and do know the people running this site (not personally but I know who they are and why this site is here for you to read).
They’re been selective, choosing who they write slander articles and knit-pick their personal lives about, and write only praises about others.

As Journalist, they should have professional integrity in the work they do and they’re failing horribly. You see, a journalist shouldn’t have an opinion in the article they write for that is the reason why WE, the people read it. What I see on this site is very OPINIONATED attitudes about certain things/behaviors in the society. All am saying is let’s be fair and professional because so far, I only see bad articles on ‘certain folks’ and not others.

You can’t write in a negative way to curb public opinion about certain folks, and write positive praises about certain folks. Their job is to REPORT what they found and not to yap off what they think. Like ‘hammer of the last 2′ said above …use the medium to help push forward and strengthen Ghanaian artists for that is what we need right now and not writing slick shit about people because they are not good humble god-fearing christians like yourself. That’s just wack! That’s what my beef with this site is about ’cause I can see through it. Your are journalists, not moral policemen. Know your roll and play your roll.

PS: Stars are born, not made!   You can backup mediocrity with your ‘machine’ as you call it all you want but if one is not destined to be, you can forget it. Stay bless and Stay up.

Jon, sadly, in this day and age, HATE has clouded a lot of people’s judgement.
P-Square has commented after the vodafone concert, advising Ghanaian Media Personnel to push Ghanaian artists forward. It’s time we start speaking out against this ‘self-righteous’ deeds that only seems to pull some hard working people down and reward the coffer’s of corrupted cowards.  Should it take P-Square, from a neighboring country to tell you that “hey, we’ve got a system pushing us forward already and don’t need your help so focus on helping your own to shine’? well, he didn’t say it in those exact words but that’s pretty much what he said.  How will anyone cherish. accept and assist our artists if WE, ourselves are always bringing out only the negative aspects of them and suppressing all their hard work efforts? Never have I heard any of the stories of how hard some of these artists struggle to get onto the platforms that they’re on but I hear a lot of negativity and their personal business been put out all the time. You see, negativity, help some people(low lifes) ’cause  they thrive on that to make themselves feel better. But Real Human Beings with clarity of thought takes no pleasure in seen their fellow man been thorn apart.  Just when Sarko won the awards, this same dude wrote a piece that was clearly to cause division between Sarko and Okyeame. Another imbecile wrote a piece on Sarko at Ghanamusic, crying like a little child and spewing all kinds of non-sense because Sarko didn’t grant him an interview. WTF?  Enough! If you can’t help with the cause, get out of the biz!
The attention whoring from this media personalities is too much dammit. These people work hard to get to where they are. Not all of them are son’s and daughter’s of corrupted minister’s like some of you self-appointed  ‘web-writers’. I’ll keep raining on your parade with the truth until you  change your ‘under-cover hating’ tactics. A bunch of band-wagon jumpers. Like good sheeps, wherever the grass is greener, they swerve there. psh. Obidibi and you know it! Go Sarko!

  46. Vodaphone are a con anyway, they are paying these artists peanuts, so what is wrong in voicing out his concerns. If Rihanna was playing at this event, will they be paying her like Gh cedis 2000! Give me a break. Sarkodie is in an industry with a lifespan, so he has to milk all opportunities that comes his way. Is anyone talking about Lord Kenya… think about it…,
