Ghanaian actress, Jackie Appiah Agyemang has been crowned as the best actress for this year’s African Movie Academy Awards. She was nominated in the category ‘Best performance by an actress in a leading role’ together with Lydia Forson and Naa Ashorkor Mensah-Doku for their roles in Shirley Frimpong Manso’s ‘Perfect Picture’.
The three Ghanaian were competed with their compatriot Akofa Edjeani Asiedu (I Sing Of A Well), Stephanie Okereke (Nnenda), Flora Suya (Season Of A Life) and Bimbo Akintola (Freedom In Chains). Jackie Appiah whose warm smiles and eloquence can’t stop producers from including her in their movies received two nominations for ‘Best Actress In A Leading Role’ and ‘Best Upcoming Actress’ at the AMAA 2008.
Jackie was not the only star who made Ghana proud at the event. Adjetey Anang popularly known as ‘Pusher’ grabbed the ‘Best Performance By An Actor In A Supporting Role’ for his unique performance in Shirley Frimpong Manso’s ‘Perfect Picture’.
The trilogy, ‘I Sing Of A Well’ which had 11 nominations swept away three awards in the categories; ‘AMAA Achievement in Sound’, ‘AMAA Achievement in Costume’ and the ‘Best Screenplay’.
Shirley Frimpong Manso’s ‘A sting in a Tale’ also won the ‘Best Original Sound Track’. She took home the AMAA Best Director with her movie, The Perfect Picture.
Ramsey Noah picked up some AMAA steam with his win in the ‘Best Performance By an Actor in a Leading Role’ (Best Actor) disappointing his colleagues; Majid Michel, John Osei Tutu, Lucky Ejim and Odera Ozoka who were eyeing the same award.
The Nigerian movie Figurine, directed by Kunle Afolayan beat them all with five awards.
The African Movie Academy Awards (AMAA) is held annually to honor distinguished actors and actresses, directors and writers in the African movie industry. Held on Saturday, April 10, 2010 amidst blitz and glamour, the sixth edition of the prestigious awards took place in Yenogoa, the capital of Bayelsa State, Nigeria. This year’s event pulled hordes of celebrities in and around the African continent. AMAA is comparable to America’s Academy Awards in terms of its class, glamour and importance in African filmmaking.
