Before the final categories and nominations were announced by the organizers of the prestigious music awards in Ghana at the Golden Tulip Hotel, there was little argument as to who wins what come 10th April 2010. Ayigbe Edem and Sarkodie were two artistes whose names were on the lips of every music lover so far as the ‘Discovery of the Year’ is concerned.
The nominees in that category as was announced by the organizers are gospel musician DSP Kofi Sarpong, Ghana’s former representative to the Big Brother Africa house, Ewe rapper Ayigbe Edem, OJ Blaq, the actor turned rapper and Sarkodie who is touted by many as the fastest rapper in Ghana.
Several high profile individual in the music fraternity including Asem, who won the accolade, last year disagrees with Richie of Lynx Entertainment on separate interviews with GhanaCelebrities.com. The former tipped Ayigbe Edem on the grounds that he has been able to sustain the Ewe language, a language less people speak in Ghana.
Richie believes among all the artistes who came up last year, Sarkodie has done more and deserves the award.
In an interview with GhanaCelebrities.com just after the final nominations, Ayigbe Edem revealed that Sarkodie would be his biggest contender especially as they both happens to be home boys.
“I think my biggest contender in that category is my own homeboy Sarkodie” he said with a straight face.
The Ewe rapper who was accused of stealing a phone alleged to worth $14,000 by his former girlfriend “Confuse” Haugen which contributed to their breakup acknowledged that a lot of people have done well under the year review.
“I think a lot of people have done well over the year, I have been around and Sarkodie has been around”.
“We both came out together and we are in competition for the same position, so I think he is a worthy adversary and the competition is going to be keen but nothing you can do is to hope for the best and wait for that day”.
The Discovery of the Year is the Artiste(s) adjudged by the Selection Committee, Planning Committee and the general public as the artiste(s) most promising and talented new artiste(s). The award goes to the artiste(s) who made most impact with his/her first commercial release (single/album) during the year under review.
