Inaki Williams, a forward who plays for Athletic Bilbao in Spain, recently announced that for his international future he prefers to play for the Spanish National team rather than the Black Stars of Ghana.
Inaki qualifies to play for the Black Stars due to his Ghanaian father, and Spain due to being born there and being a citizen.
Williams, born in Bilbao and playing for the Basque club Athletic, has represented Spain at junior level, but could still switch to Ghana.
However, Williams has made the choice to continue playing for Spain, saying that he remembers where he hails from but it’s better to play for Spain.
“I don’t forget where my family came from,” Williams said, referring to his Ghanaian father and Liberian mother.
“But on a sporting level, it would be better to play for Spain…. And I have to be grateful to the place that has given me everything.” he added.
Quite surprisingly, Ghanaians are actually thrilled about his decision.
On social media, most people are praising him for his choice as they say coming to play for Ghana would have been a waste of his talent and would not have accrued any benefit for him.
Some condemned him for his choice but by and large Ghanaians agree that leaving Spain to come and play for the Stars would have been the biggest mistake of his life.
Check out some of the reactions to his decision below…
