Akosombo Textile Limited Has Not Paid Workers For The Past Four Months – Laid Off 200 Others

As the hot Ghanaian ‘ecomini’ continues to batter us all some companies continue to lay off workers and cut off their source of livelihood.
If you thought it was bad enough in the banking sector – where an insane number of banks have gone under within the past two years, leaving thousands of Ghanaians unemployed – the clothing and textile industry also has something to say about that.
The Akosombo Textile Limited (ATL) has not paid its workers for the past four months, a spokesperson for the workers union has revealed.
John Kofi Abeka, spokesperson for the Coalition of Textile Workers in Ghana, says ATL has laid off 200 of its workers and even for those who remain, they have not received their salaries for the past four months.

“200 workers at Akosombo Textiles have been laid off because piracy is killing the sale of the textiles industry; the rest of the workers have also not been paid for the past four months,” he said on Accra Fm Wednesday.

Opining further, Abeka called for government to find a way to deal with the piracy issue so more of their members do not fall out of employment.

“We are in Ghana but we are working for the economies of China and other countries due to piracy, this is a huge problem that the government must deal with.
“We do not plan to hit the streets to protest, all we want is the implementation of the roadmap given by the government to deal with piracy…We don’t understand why this action cannot be taken immediately because the piracy is killing our businesses.” he added.
