In His Honour –Sweet Potato Is Set To Be Named After Kofi Annan

In his honour, Kofi Annan is set to be named after a newly discovered variety of sweet potato.
The former United Nations Secretary General was apparently a big advocate of the crop during his lifetime.
The Crops Research Institute of the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) has decided to name a new strain of the potato after him to honour his contributions to its farming.
The new crop is known as the AGRA SP-19, or CRI-Kofi Annan.

It is pending approval by the National Varietal Release Committee of the Ministry of Food and Agriculture before it can be cultivated.
Annan, whose final rites are being held in Ghana this week, founded the Alliance for Green Revolution for Africa (AGRA) which, among others, advocated sweet potato production.
