STATEMENT: GBC Board Directs Management Not To Prosecute Any Ghanaian For Not Paying Tv Licence — The People Have Won!

The Board of the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) has directed its management to refrain from prosecuting any Ghanaian who fails to pay the tv licence fee, citing the immense public opposition brewing against the move.
GBC has never been a darling of Ghanaians and this tv licence saga has made the company even more unpopular than it used to be, a complete PR disaster.
In the wake of stiff public opposition, the company has backed down following a board meeting where the board made the ultimate decision.
A statement issued after the meeting said Management of GBC should not prosecute any Ghanaian for not paying, instead calling on the National Media Commission (NMC) to find a way to fund the company going forward instead of the expected revenue from the tv licence levy.

“The Board following an evaluation of the situation, has instructed the Management of the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) not to pursue any activity, or set the processes , leading to the prosecution of any individual for the nonpayment of TV license fee”, the statement read, in part.
GBC advised the Chief Justice to set up special courts to prosecute Ghanaians who fail to pay the tv licence levy but since then Ghanaians have kicked against the levy, with even public figures like A Plus, Edem and Abronye DC all criticizing it.
