Army Sends Troops To Denkyira Following Lynching Of Officer

The Ghana Armed Forces have deployed military personnel to Denkyira-Obuasi in the Central Region following the lynching of an officer to death after being mistaken for an armed robber.

The troops are led by the Chief of Army Staff, Major General Obed Akwa, and number over thirty.

“A high-powered fact-finding team led by the Chief of Army Staff [Major General Obed Akwa] is proceeding to the scene of the incident to ascertain the facts of the case.” a statement released by the Armed Forces read.

Amid fears the soldiers are on a revenge mission to the area, Army spokesperson Col. Aggrey Quarshie has told Joy News they are simply there to ascertain the facts of the case.

If you’re thinking that sounds like a job for the police, it’s because it is.

Capt Maxwell Mahama, of the 5 Battalion of Infantry based out of Burma Camp, was lynched by a mob in the area on suspicion of being an armed robber.

The captain was jogging in the area and was armed, but some who saw him mistook him for an armed robber and decided to take matters into their own hands.
