The 2017 French Presidential elections are over and Emmanuel Macron has been projected to become the next President of the country.
Moderate Macron is projected to pick up the victory by 65.5% to 34.5% over the far right candidate Marine Le Pen.
The election, a run-off after neither candidate was able to cross the 50% mark in the first round, had been billed as a referendum on a dangerous wave of populism sweeping the West, from Brexit to Trump’s election in the US, but for once it seemed ‘cooler’ heads prevailed in France.
Macron, a third party candidate, becomes the first person to win the Presidency in France from outside the two main parties. At 39, he also becomes the youngest French President in history.
Macron takes office on May 14, 2017.
